The process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a controversial and often expensive way to conceive a baby. In IVF, a woman’s eggs are retrieved and fertilized in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred into her uterus to try to create a baby. There are several different procedures used in IVF. The most common is assisted reproductive technology (ART), which includes IVF, in-vitro fertilization (IVF-I), and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). ART is usually more successful than natural reproduction.
