SUMMER IS NEARLY HERE
The countdown to summer and the opportunity for the best fishing in Alaska is quickly
approaching. The peak of the salmon season starts up in June and lasts through
September. Start planning your Alaska fishing adventure now while there’s still time to
book your stay at Alaska Rainbow Lodge before the prime Alaska fishing season draws
any closer. We’ll give you a rundown on what to bring for your visit as well as what kind
of fish you can expect to bring home!
CHECKLIST ITEMS
Be sure that you’re prepared for your Alaska fishing adventure by bringing all the
necessities you may need for your trip. After all, it’s better to overpack than to not be
completely ready for your trip! You’re going to need sun protection as you spend most
days outdoors fishing in the peak times of the searing sun during the summer months.
You’ll want to bring strong sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat to keep the sun away from
your scalp. Rain gear should be high on your checklist, as the weather is subject to
change at any given moment in Alaska.
Be prepared with waterproof pants, and at a minimum, have a rain jacket on board.
Proper footwear and waders are a must whether you’re fishing on land or a charter.
Outdoor boots/shoes that have soles to grip the deck and shoes with ankle protection
are recommended. Lastly, be sure to bring a camera to capture the moment after a
monster catch! Pack a ziplock baggie when using a cellphone to be sure to protect your
phone from water damage.
BEST FISHING IN ALASKA
The best time to head out to Alaska to fish is somewhere between May to September as
it is the peak season for salmon fishing. During mid-June, king salmon start to migrate
into the Naknek and Nushagak rivers. It is followed by sockeye salmon peaking near late
June and early July in the Naknek and Alagnak rivers. You can also expect to catch Arctic
char, grayling, and northern pike during June. It’s no secret that the Nushagak River
offers the best fishing in Alaska and is especially top-notch for salmon fishing, so there
will also be an abundance of chum, pink, and silver salmon in late summer. For the most
part, aside from fluke bad weather days, June is the perfect time for clear blue skies and
warm weather, so keep this in mind when planning your trip to Alaska Rainbow Lodge.
