We all love sunbathing and take the heat to our bones lying under the
sun. Besides, you might have a fascination for the beautiful tan on your
skin. Well, lying under the sun comes with a plethora of health benefits.
However, without adequate protection, you might be doing it the wrong
way. While you are eagerly waiting for your next sunbath, it’s time to
have a look at the harmful impact of excessive exposure to the sun.
Why is excessive exposure to the sun harmful?
To help you experience a better sunbathing session the next time, we
have explained the adverse effects of excessive sun exposure. Check out
the adverse effects of excessive sun exposure and make sure to take
adequate guard against the same.
Skin damage (short-term)
Exposure to the sun for just 15 minutes without sunscreen can lead to
skin damage. Well, you might not immediately realize this damage, but
the effect will show up on your skin in 2 to 6 hours. This includes
radiation burns when your skin remains exposed to harmful UV rays.
Along with the reddening of your skin, you might get blisters and pain.
In severe conditions, you may get second-degree burns.
Skin damage (long-term)
If you habitually expose yourself to the sun, the aging process of your
skin accelerates. So, you would experience premature wrinkles on your
skin. Besides, your skin might sag and look dull and leathery.
Prolonged exposure to the sun without adequate protection can also
result in age spots or pigment changes on your skin. Besides, the quality
of your skin would deteriorate, and it would get bruises easily.
In adverse conditions, prolonged exposure to the sun permanently
damages your skin cells and results in skin cancer. Broadly, you can get
three types of cancer on your skin. These are squamous-cell carcinoma,
basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Heat stroke
Prolonged heat exposure under the sun can have a severe impact on
health, such as heat stroke. It begins with exhaustion, cramps, and
fainting, and gradually aggravates. Under adverse conditions, it can
cause damage to your internal organs as well as the brain.
Some of the common signs of heat stroke include:
• Vomiting or nausea
• Throbbing headache
• Dizziness
• Weakness and muscle cramps
• Shallow breathing and rapid heartbeat
• Loss of consciousness, disorientation, and Confusion
Dehydration
When you sunbathe, you tend to sweat a lot. Unless you reimburse your
system with adequate amounts of fluid, the water level in your body
becomes unbalanced. Remember, under severe conditions, dehydration
can even cause death.
• Some of the common signs of dehydration include:
• Yellow color in your urine
• Swollen tongue
• Dryness in your mouth
• Weakness and dizziness
• Decreased urine output
• More thirst for water
• Inability to sweat
• Fainting and sluggishness
• Palpitations in the heart
This explains why experts recommend consuming plenty of water and
juicy vegetables like tomatoes while sunbathing.
Hives or solar urticaria
Solar urticaria or hives are also an impact of excessive exposure to the
sun. You might notice itchy patches on your skin or red welts that
develop as soon as you go out in the sun. These patches last for a few
hours and can bother you even after you come indoors. Although this is
a rare condition, it is a negative effect of prolonged heat exposure.
Along with this, you may experience nausea, weakness, and headaches.
Solar urticaria generally affects females more than males.
Now that you are aware of the adverse effect of prolonged exposure to
the sun, make sure to sunbathe in the right way. Keeping yourself
hydrated and secure from the heat can help you benefit from the sun’s
rays.
