How to prevent from sulphur dioxide emissions in Norilsk

Norilsk - the hometown of great people I suppose each of you has heard about the city of Norilsk. As you probably know, this place is a forbidden destination for foreigners. So, if you don’t have a Russian passport, you will never go there. But as for me, this fact makes the city more interesting, as it’s often said: “Forbidden fruit is the sweetest”. People are usually more interested in the things that are forbidden rather than those that are easily accessible. What does actually make you curious: the pentagon or the garden near your house? I bet, the first one would attract more attention, because of its inaccessibility. So, let’s get closer to the object of the text. Norilsk - basic data Norilsk is located in the north of Russia and is often considered to be the most northern settlement in the world. But in fact, it’s not. The most northern settlement in the world is Svalbard in Norway. However, Svalbard has only 35 residents and is almost uninhabited. If we speak about larger settlements with more than 100’000 residents, then Norilsk is the most northern city in the world. There are 175’000 permanent residents in the city, this number of residents could be compared to a European city. From the geographic position of Norilsk, it’s easy to conclude that the climate conditions are harsh. The summer temperatures can hardly go higher than 0 Celcius degrees. The average temperature is -10 degrees. Not everyone would survive in these conditions. But let’s look at the bright side of things, harsh weather conditions can help you to build your character. So, let’s know more about those whose characters were built by the great city of Norilsk. Prominent residents of Norilsk The first native of Norilsk I’d like to speak about is Dmitriy Torbinskiy. Dmitriy Torbinskiy was known as the sign of Russian football. Every Russian boy tried to imitate his playing style. Torbinskiy was born in 1984, he spent his young years in Norilsk, but a few years later his family moved to Moscow. Dmitriy started his football career in FC Spartak Moscow youth academy. In 2008, Mr. Torbinskiy played in the Russian National Football team and won bronze medals at EURO-2008. Moreover, he scored the decisive goal to the Netherlands National Team. In 2019 Dmitriy Torbinkiy ended his playing career and in 2020 he became the coach of the “Miami United”. The second former resident of Norilsk I’d like to mention is Alexander Novak. I bet, almost everyone has heard this name. Mr. Novak is known as a former Minister of energy of Russia. Novak actually wasn’t born in Norilsk, but this city can be called the hometown of Mr. Novak as he spent many years there. Well, the politician was born in Donetsk, but when he was small his family moved to Norilsk. There Alexander Novak spent his school and university years. Moreover, Mr. Novak started his career in Norilsk. A few years later, he became an official in Krasnoyarsk Krai. Then Alexander Novak became the deputy minister of finances and finally, in 2012 he became the Minister of Energy of Russian Federation. He held this post until 2020. Norilsk is also known as the hometown for some notable scientists, Alexander Auzan is one of those. He was born in 1954 in Norilsk. After he had finished his middle school, Mr. Auzan entered the Moscow State University named after Lomonosov. In 1991 Alexander Auzan got a Ph.D. in economics. In 1993 Mr. Auzan became the professor at the faculty of economics. He is an expert in institutional economics. Furthermore, Alexander Auzan worked in many countries as an invited professor. In addition, Mr. Auzan took part in the development of the Russian National Strategy. Russian songwriter and art-activist Nadezhda Tolokonnikova was also born in Norilsk. She graduated from the secondary school №23. After graduation, she moved to Moscow and there she studied philosophy at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. After all, she took part in many art-projects that are known even abroad. As we can see it from the abovementioned examples, every city has its own heroes. And the hometown plays a huge role in one’s life. A lot of prominent writers and painters devoted their works to their hometowns. I hope you enjoyed the stories about notable people who were born or lived in Norilsk, the most northern city in the world.
