Know More About Bone- Anchored Hearing Bone-anchored hearing devices are implantable devices used tAo imipdrov e( hBeariAng bHy trAans)mitting sound directly to the inner ear through the skull. Sound energy causes vibrations in the skull which are transmitted to the inner ear, which results in hearing. They have been successfully used to improve patients' hearing for more than 30 years. Bone anchored hearing devices may be an effective solution for multiple varieties of hearing loss. Some patients are incapable of wearing hearing aids due to the size of the ear canal, chronic drainage, or severe hearing loss. A BAHA may be a solution for these patients, however a bone anchored hearing devices are not a solution for every patient. Whether or not a bone anchored hearing device may be an effective solution for you will depend on your type of hearing loss, quantity of hearing loss, physical examination, and hearing history. This information will be discussed with your Coastal provider to determine if a bone anchored hearing device is right for you. Each bone-anchored hearing device consists of an implanted titanium fixture and a detachable sound processor that clips onto that fixture. Using a minimally invasive procedure, a bone anchored hearing device is surgically implanted in the skull behind the ear. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can return home after the procedure. After healing has occurred and the device has integrated into the skull, the bone anchored hearing device is activated, facilitating hearing. Know the Types of Hearing Loss Sensorineural Hearing Loss Sensorineural hearing loss, also known as “nerve loss,” is a result of damage to the microscopic hair cells within the inner ear and/or to the nerve of hearing. This damage can be due to genetics, advancing age, or noise exposure. If you are worried about hearing loss, call us to get an appointment with one of the doctors at any three locations: Neptune, Holmdel or Manahawkin, New Jersey. Approximately 90% of hearing losses are sensorineural. In fact, most people who wear hearing aids have sensorineural hearing loss. In most cases, these types of hearing loss are permanent and cannot be treated by medication or surgery. Hearing aids are thus the primary mode of treatment. In cases of severe or profound cases, cochlear implants may be a consideration. Conductive Hearing Loss A conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is not able to reach a healthy inner ear adequately. This can be due to: a blockage in the ear canal such as wax fluid in the typically dry middle ear space poor movement of the bones (ossicles) located in the middle ear conditions where people have malformed or absent ear canals and/or pinnae (the visible portion of the ear on the side of the Cont. head) ... Know the Types of Hearing Loss Mixed Hearing Loss Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both sensorineural (“nerve loss”) and conductive hearing losses which occur simultaneously. Surgery, hearing aids and assistive listening devices are all treatment options. Know What Are The Benefits of Hearing loss has Hsocieal, aprorfeissniongal, aAnd ihedaltsh i?mpacts. Multiple studies have shown that unaddressed hearing loss can lead to social isolation, loneliness, and depression. Perhaps due to the lack of interpersonal interaction, hearing loss is also linked to cognitive decline and dementia. Wearing hearing aids is about more than improving hearing. When you can hear and understand what others are saying, you are more involved in your life. You can carry on conversations and connect with colleagues and those you love. Hearing well reduces your risk of accidents and also fosters long-term cognitive health. Know More About Custom Earmolds Custom earmolds are made to specifically fit the size and shape of your individual ear, which provides for a more comfortable fit compared to many over-the-counter options. The tighter, more accurate fit provides for a better seal to protect against noise exposure or to keep water out of the ear. An audiologist takes impressions of each ear using a silicone material; these impressions are then sent out to an earmold manufacturer who will make the molds specific for each order. Earmolds are available in various materials and colors. For children, it is recommended that they use earmolds attached to their hearing aids. Since their ears are constantly growing and changing in size and shape, the audiologist will need to monitor the fit of the earmolds at regular follow-up appointments. Cont.... Some Common Types of Custom Musician MoldsEarmolds Musician molds filter out high levels of noise without changing the sound quality of music. This type of mold is available in a choice of three different filters depending on the amount of sound attenuation that is needed. It is recommended for musicians or frequent concert attendees. Swim Molds Swim molds prevent water from getting into the ear canal. Swim molds are recommended for individuals with ear tubes, surfers, and people who frequently get swimmer’s ear. Hearing Protection Hearing Protection attenuates the level of sound reaching the ear to help reduce damage to inner ear function and potential hearing loss from exposure to loud noise. These are recommended for hunters, target shooters, and individuals who have an occupation that exposes them to dangerous noise levels. Know More About Cochlear Implants A cochlear implant is an electronic device that restores partial hearing to the deaf. It is surgically implanted in the inner ear and activated by a device worn outside the ear. Unlike a hearing aid, it does not make sound louder or clearer. Instead, the device bypasses damaged parts of the auditory system and directly stimulates the nerve of hearing, allowing individuals who are profoundly hearing impaired to receive sound.
