What is Import and Export ?
Definition & Meaning
• Import : An Import Is A Good or Service, That Is Brought Into One 
Country From Another Country. 
• E.g. : Buying Garments From Websites Like Aliexpress 
• Export : An Export Is The Process Of Taking  Product or Service From 
Home Country To Another Country.
• E.g. : The Mangoes of Your Farm To A Fruit Store In USA
Basic Category of Export and Import : 
 Industrial Goods – Machinery , Manufacturing Plants And 
Materials.
 Consumer Goods – Ready To Use Goods – Packed Food , Clothes 
 Intermediate Goods – Partly Finished Goods – Pharmaceutical Raw 
Materials
 Services – Website Developing , Accounts , Data Mining.
Types of Importer
•   Actual User : (Industrial) Means A Person Who Utilises Imported Goods 
For Manufacturing In His Own Industrial Unit Or Manufacturing For His Own 
Use In Another Unit Including A Jobbing Unit.
•   Actual User : (Individual) Means A Person Who Utilises The Imported 
Goods For His Own Use In Any Commercial Establishment Carrying On Any 
Business, Trade Or Profession
•   Trader
Types of Exporter
•   Manufacturer Exporter- Is An Exporter Who Exports Goods Which Are 
Manufactured By Himself/Herself. This Type Of Exporters Are Also Known As “Direct 
Exporters”. This Type Of Export Is Known As “Direct Export”. This Type Of Exporters Has To 
Take Risks. But They Can Gain More Profit. The Manufacturer Exporters Will Export The 
Products In Their Own Name. They Won’t Need Any Intermediates For Exporting.
•   Merchant Exporter- Is An Exporter Who Buys Goods From Many Manufacturers And 
Exports Them (Goods) By Manufacturer’s Company Name Or Their Company Name. This Type 
Of Exporters Are Also Known As “Indirect Exporters”. This Type Of Export Is Known 
As “Indirect Export”. Merchant Exporter Won’t Have Their Own Processing Factory Or 
Manufacturing Unit.
