Book reading contributes to the emotional and mental growth of children 
and this is substantiated by several studies. It has been seen that when 
children read a lot of good books, there is an improvement in their 
confidence and knowledge levels. They are able to confidently interact 
with people.
There are many more benefits for children when book reading becomes 
an element of their everyday life. It will now be worthwhile to speak of 
the most important of these positive aspects.

• Cognitive development: One of the most striking benefits of book 
reading is that it boosts cognitive development in kids. Children get 
plenty of knowledge through books which helps them in properly 
comprehending things that they come across, as a part of daily life.
• Better concentration: When a child begins to read books, their 
capability to concentrate increases. With this, children have no hassles 
in sitting for an extended duration in classrooms and grasping what 
their teacher is conveying.

• Memory power: Inculcating the habit of book reading in a child is 
among the best ways to strengthen their memory power. This is more

Tips to parents
Now, let us take the instances where the child is too young to read on 
their own. Here, the tender age should not be a deterrent in slowly 
starting to teach them about the significance of reading. In this context, 
parents are better off adhering to some key guidelines.

• Much before a child gets aware of the printed word, they can easily 
observe pictures and become attentive to the voice of the parent. 
Here, parents are advised to read out the story to the child/children, 
while simultaneously showing them images in the book.
• Parents have to read out the content of the books to their kids, as 
frequently as possible. This ensures that when the child learns to read, 
they will automatically get interested in reading a variety of books.
• When you read out to children, encourage them to express doubts and 
questions. The clarifications and answers that you provide will assist 
the child in developing a genuine interest in book reading.

Continue to read along with your child, even after they have learnt to read 
on their own. This small step by the parents shall go a long way in keeping 
the kid motivated to read more and more.
Instilling an interest in book reading in young minds is not a matter of

become successful in life.
