Irrespective of our precise professional activity, it is indispensable that we 
develop good reading abilities. Nowadays, as a part of the job/business, 
people are necessitated to read several web pages, project proposals, 
press releases, journals, and emails. Thus, having increased reading 
efficiency has become more important than ever before. That is now a 
crucial skill necessary for all professions.

It is to be noted that almost all the individuals who have achieved 
phenomenal success have the reading habit. But here, we need to 
understand that reading is not synonymous with learning. When we open 
a book with the sole purpose of reading it as quickly as possible, it serves 
little purpose. The actual objective of reading can be realized only if you 
are committed to obtaining knowledge from the book.  Especially, if the 
book is good. 
We will now focus on some significant guidelines about how book reading 
can be made into a real learning experience.

• Firstly, you have to have total clarity as to why you intend to read a 
given book. There should be no ambiguity about what exactly you 
want to gain from the book.
• There are situations where a person is required to gather some 
information as fast as possible. Here, there won’t be sufficient time to 
read the whole book. In such scenarios, we can depend upon 
abstracts, headings, summaries, FAQs, and graphics. This ensures that 
you quickly access the concerned details.

• If what you seek is an understanding of every minute detail of the 
book and not its overall gist, concentrate more on charts, diagrams, 
and graphs. In many instances, these are the things that convey to you 
about salient aspects mentioned in the text.
• While reading a book, make it a point to simultaneously highlight key 
phrases and words. Keep referring to this highlighted content 
frequently to enhance the knowledge derived from that book.

• Another excellent way to ensure that you extract maximum 
information from a book is to share the content with people. This 
invariably will lead to an exchange of ideas and discussions on the 
concerned facets. And, all that is going to contribute to your 
knowledge in no uncertain terms.
• As soon as you complete reading a book, set a goal to be reached 
based on the details that the book has given you. Come out with a 
plan to attain this objective and implement it. Once you accomplish 
this target, you obviously will get motivated to read more books.

• The importance of reading a book to learn new things should never be 
overlooked. Once we are through with a book, we must not think that 
our job is over. Here, you should write down the main points of the 
book on its first page. That shall be something like an outline. With 
this, when the person reads the book  again they will be benefited 
without having to eread the book completely again.  The job becomes 
simpler.
 
An individual should never confine themselves only to reading books, 
without attempting to put the knowledge to use in actual life. Knowledge 
they say is power, we should use this power to bring about a positive 
difference in our lives.
