How to Know If Your Freezer is Malfunctioning The Basic Checks

How to Know If Your Freezer is Malfunctioning? The Basic Checks At times, your lab freezer might develop malfunctions and fail to function correctly. Here are a few practical ways to check your freezer malfunctioning. ------ A lab owner needs no explanation about how essential an ultra-low temperature freezer is for his lab. It is a critical piece of equipment without which he cannot run his lab. With freezing temperatures ranging between -30 and -40 degrees F, an ultra-low temperature freezer is ideal cold storage for drugs, enzymes, tissue samples, and other biological specimens. These freezers are suitable for research and clinical establishments. But such a freezer is a piece of mechanical equipment prone to breakdowns and failures. It can have all kinds of problems from different components. The freezer can also stop working or malfunction. So, what can be the ways for you in such a situation? Read on to know the action plan: Noises When you hear your freezer making noises, you can expect some problems with the evaporator fan motor. It needs a replacement. In this context, there is an important thing to note. Not all freezers will make the same noise when the motor malfunctions. Besides, noises from freezers can also emanate from the ice maker. You need to find out if there is an issue with the ice maker. Check out whether the ice maker is working correctly and if the freezer is not maintaining the necessary temperature. If you find these things working correctly, then the noise can be due to its regular operation. It is challenging to diagnose a noise complaint. The noise that appears loud during the day might be quiet during the day. If you find an issue apart from the noise, then that problem might cause the noise. Therefore, refer to the instruction manual for details regarding normal operating sounds. Frost Build-Up The solution to the problem of frost build-up is replacing the defrost heater. However, there can be other solutions depending on where the frost is forming. If you see the frost formation around the freezer door's gaskets, it can be because the door is not closed correctly. So, check out if any item inside the freezer prevents the gaskets from sealing tightly, such as packages sticking out, any drawer not fully sealing, an ice container without proper locking, or any item on top of the freezer. Also, find out if the freezer temperature is set too low. And the indication is light and snowy frost everywhere. With shallow temperatures, the moisture will turn into snow. So, ensure your freezer is at the right temperature. There can be chances of the freezer door being left open if hard and icy first frost is everywhere. Firstly, frost will form closer to the door and eventually cover the entire freezer interior. In such an occurrence, allow the freezer to go through a few defrost cycles. The freezer will turn to normalcy. If the freezer fails to defrost, it can be due to a defective heater, defrost sensor, or control board. There has to be troubleshooting to locate the root of the issue. Water Leakage You might sometimes see water leaking on the floor from the freezer. It can be due to defrosting drain having frozen, and hence, it needs defrosting and cleaning. Moreover, the water leak can be due to the melting of dropped ice or spilling water while filling a glass. The cause of water leakage can also be overfilling the condensation pan due to excessive frost formation on the evaporator coils. When the freezer undergoes a defrost cycle, it might produce more water than what the drain pan can hold. It will help if you minimize the number of times the freezer door is opened and close the door as soon as possible after opening. If there is a leak on the condensation pan, it needs to be replaced or repaired. Stops Functioning If your freezer stops working, it might be due to faulty electronic controls. You should replace them. But, check out whether the electricity is intact and the freezer light is on. If not, there can be an issue with the power connection or supply. So, check out whether the power is switched on. New freezers can be in the showroom or demo mode used on the sales floor to demonstrate features without putting the cooling system on. Check out if your freezer is in the demo mode. If it is, go through the manual instructions on how to set the freezer out of the demo mode. Ensure that power is going inside the freezer. You can check that by seeing whether the interior lighting or user interface display is on. If you see no power going into the freezer, check out the power outlet by plugging in something else, like a lamp. If it shows no power, then the outlet might be faulty. Call up an electrician to fix the outlet. If the outlet has power, then there can be a problem with the control boards, user interface boards, or the temperature-monitoring devices such as the sensors and thermostats. It needs troubleshooting to locate the problem. Warm Temperature Warm temperature indicates a faulty defrost thermostat and that needs replacement. However, there can be other reasons as well. Someone might accidentally adjust the freezer temperature to a warmer temperature. In that case, adjust the temperature to the requisite level. And ensure that your freezer is at least 30 percent full. While overstocking will limit the unit's airflow, too little stuff will cause cold air to spill out every time you open the door.
