World Trade Organization - WTO
Slide 1
What is the WTO
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the
only global international organization trade with
the rules of trade between nations. At its heart
are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed
by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and
ratified in their parliaments. The aim is to help
producers of goods and services, exporters, and
importers conduct their business.
How was the World Trade
Organization WTO established ?
The WTO's predecessor, the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), was created after
World War II in the wake of other new
multilateral institutions dedicated to
international economic cooperation – such as
the World Bank and the International Monetary
Fund.
The World Trade Organization has number of
ways. First it is an organization for trade
opening. It is a forum for governments to
negotiate trade agreements. It is a place for
them to settle trade disputes. It operates a
system of trade rules. Essentially, the WTO is a
place where member governments try to sort out
the trade problems they face with each other.
The WTO is run by its member governments. All
important decisions are made by the
membership as a whole, either by ministers
(who usually meet at least once every two years)
or by their ambassadors or delegates (who meet
regularly in Geneva).
How many countries are in the World
Trade Organization?
164 countries are currently members of the
WTO. The following 24 countries are currently
negotiating their WTO membership (by date of
application). 31 accessions have been completed
since the WTO was established in 1995.
Afghanistan becomes 164th member of WTO.
Main objective of WTO ?
(1) To set and enforce rules for international
trade
(2) To provide a forum for negotiating and
monitoring further trade liberalization,
(3) To resolve trade disputes,
(4) To increase the transparency of decision
making processes,
(5) To cooperate with other major international
economic.
