It is surprisingly different from ordinary foreign 
films
The premise of the film is very 
creative and the documentary 
style is well thought out and 
convincingly realistic. Granted, 
this was nothing new for South 
African filmmakers, but the fact 
t hat the film takes place in 
Johannesburg and doesn't have 
any great actors (well, at the time) 
makes it wonderfully different from 
typical foreign films

The hero or heroine is just a neutral supporting 
character or villain
So we have this wonderfully realistic (because 
everything that could be real was real) sci-fi/alien 
invasion story that is interesting enough to be a 
stand-alone film, and when I first saw it, I was 
convinced that it was. None of the characters 
seemed to be the hero or heroine, just neutral 
supporting characters or villains. I think the film 
was original in that it didn't give us a human 
character to root for but instead focused on the 
(admittedly very interesting) alien problem.

But as interesting, thoughtful, and 
logical as the main plot was, it 
turned out to be just a 
complicated backdrop for one of 
the most unexpected characters 
I've ever seen. Sharlto Copley 
was not an actor but a producer 
when he accepted the role of 
Vikus van der Merwe for his 
director friend Neill Blomkamp, 
but when he became Vikus, he 
became not just an actor but 
one of the best in the busines5 s.
He enjoys being the subject of a documentary he has

Vikus begins with a caricatured 
stereotype of a civil servant stupid, 
shallow, flamboyant, and maybe a little 
funny, but mostly because he feels sorry 
for himself for not knowing how annoying

possible on camera, chatting happily and 
happily while doing his job, which at times

But his ego prevents him from achieving hero 
status. until the very end. In the final climax, he 
enters the exotic fantasy as a desperate coward 
living out his last hope and emerges as a brave, 
selfless, and totally powerful hero. I found it very 
interesting and strange that throughout the movie 
this man never stopped talking he told the truth 
almost constantly, at every opportunity and to 
anyone who would listen but in the final scene 
when he finally becomes the hero we never thought 
he could be, he doesn't say a word.

Character Physical change from human to animal
In my opinion, some of the 
scenes in between were 
unnecessary, and I will always 
prefer the nuanced, reality-
based performance moments to 
anything the film has to offer, 
but overall, the result has a 
unique and idiosyncratic charm
