Cement is one of the very frequently used product in the modern world. Cement is 
manufactured by making use of raw material like lime stone. The raw materials are 
processed in several steps to produce cement. Industrial process fans serve their 
purpose in the cement manufacturing process at various steps such as material 
handling, preheating, cooling, etc.
Industrial Process Fans Used For Material Handling In Cement 
Manufacture
Raw materials such as the limestone, clay and sand are collected from the quarry. 
Large-sized rocks of these raw materials are crushed at the quarry. Once the raw 
materials are crushed into gravels, they are proportioned such as limestone is 80% 
and clay is 20% in the manufacturing plant.
During the crushing and proportioning of raw materials, industrial fans are used for 
dust exhaust and material handling.
Industrial Process Fans Used In The Grinding Process
After proportioning the raw materials they are processed for grinding. The 
proportioned raw blend is grounded by employing a rotating table along with heavy 
wheel type rollers. The raw mix is made into fine powder after the grinding process. 
Raw mill industrial fans are required in the grinding process. Raw mill industrial fans 
are used to carry the gas and the raw mix. When heavy wheel type rollers are used, 
large raw mill fans are employed. Centrifugal process fans are also used extensively 
in other grinding process.
Role Of Industrial Fans In Preheating
The preheating process is a phase before the kiln heating. The raw mix is allowed to 
pass through the preheating chamber which has a series of vertical cyclones, 
preheating chamber makes use of the hot gases from the kiln. To maintain 
continuous passage of these hot gases industrial fans are required.
Use Of Induced Draft Fans In The Kiln Process
Kiln process is a method where the raw material is heated up to 1450°C in order to 
initiate a chemical reaction which forms the cement clinkers. This chemical process is 
called limestone de-carbonation.
To enable the heating process in the kiln, Induced draft fans are a must. Induced 
draft fans favor the gas flow and the combustion of the fuel by providing sufficient 
air.  The raw material forms the shape of the clinker after the kiln process.
Coal is the common fuel used in the kiln burner. Coal mill fans are used to facilitate 
the combustion of coal for the flame used in the rotatory kiln. Coal mill fans are also 
used as exhaust systems besides combustion. These fans provide air for burning coal 
and eliminate the exhaust gases after the coal is burnt. 
Role Of Cooling Fans In Clinker Cooling Process
Clinker process in the cement manufacturing involves cooling of the clinker i.e., the 
high temperatures present in the clinkers are lowered by driving continuous air. 
Cooling fans are used to blow cool air and bring down the temperature of the 
clinkers from 1500 °C to 100 °C. Use of cooling fans maintains the quality of the 
clinker. Cooler exhaust fans are employed to exhaust the air after the clinker 
production.
Exhaust Fans In The Clinker Grinding Process
Once the clinkers are cooled, they are crushed to a fine powder which is considered 
as the cement. Exhaust fans/Dedusting fans are used to dedust the plant and also 
exhaust the unnecessary gases.
Industrial fans play a vital role in cement manufacturing. They are utilized in almost 
all the steps of cement production. Based on the purpose, industrial fans of various 
types are used in different stages of cement manufacturing.
