Looking at the alarming situation and data around climate
change and resources have forced us to consider our own
footprint and look for ways we can change. We need to make
an effort to replace household products with eco-friendly
items. A plastic ban is just not enough to save our planet. We
need to look for every possible way we can make a
difference. Here is a list of household products that can be
replaced with eco-friendly items:
1. Reusable grocery bags- Each year, we use an estimated
500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags. Using reusable grocery
bags is a simple way to cut down on the habit without
missing out on convenience – if you make sure to only buy
enough to meet your needs, and remember to bring them
every time. Using reusable grocery bags is a great way to
replace plastic bags.
2. Rechargeable batteries- Batteries are made up of variety
of chemicals, some of which are toxic and can cause soil and
water pollution. In order to reduce pollution rechargeable
batteries are quite helpful. To prolong the usage of batteries
and keep them out of landfills, you may need to look into
rechargeable batteries.
3. Biodegradable trash bags- Biodegradable trash bags are
100% compostable and meet the requirement of composting
programs. Investment in biodegradable trash bags can play a
big role in making the planet plastic free. They are also BPI
certified and ideal for your home.
4. Non-Toxic Cookware- Many people are not aware of the
fact that toxic cookware emits chemicals that are leached
into your food. It can have long term negative effect on your
health. Sustainable cookware is the best substitute for non-
toxic cookware.
5. Stainless steel straws- Using plastic straw is quite not
safe. At the same time, paper or bamboo straws are not
generally used as they fall apart quickly. Instead, You should
prefer stainless steel straws because they are durable and also
they will not rust.
6. LED light bulbs- LED light bulbs are 80% more efficient than
traditional lighting options. 95% of the energy is converted into
light and only 5% is wasted as heat. They also use less power,
which lowers the demand on power plants and decreases the
accompanying greenhouse gas emission.
7. Reusable, non-plastic meal prep containers- Instead of adding
more plastic, grab some glass meal prep containers for a non-
toxic solution. Glass meal containers can be reused and are no
harmful impact on your health.
8. Bamboo utensils- Using bamboo utensils in place of
plastic forks or knives are better option. They are light
weight and easy to use. These small step is a good starting
towards an eco-friendly lifestyle.
9. Reusable water bottles- Even though recyclable
program exist, about 90% of the water bottles we use every
year end up in a landfill. Invest in a reusable water bottle
and skip plastic disposable bottles. A vacuum insulated
stainless steel water bottle will not need replacement for a
long time, which saves your money and also keeps you
healthy.
10. Reusable coffee filters- Instead of popping in a new k-
cup every morning only to toss it into a waste bin, consider
saving your space and money by using reusable coffee
filters.
