What is sick building
syndrome?
The term "sick building syndrome" (SBS) is used to
describe situations in which building occupants
experience acute health and comfort effects that
appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no
specific illness or cause can be identified. The
complaints may be localized in a particular room or
zone, or may be widespread throughout the building.
In contrast, the term "building related illness" (BRI) is
used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are
identified and can be attributed directly to airborne
building contaminants.
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms include throat irritation
breathing difficulties, tightness in the chest,
runny nose, allergy-like symptoms, such as
sneezing, burning sensations in the nose, dry,
itchy skin rashes, headaches, dizziness, body
aches, fever, chills etc
What are its causes?
Main causes behind this are high levels of dust,
tobacco, smoke,rooms with poor lighting,
outdated computer displays that cause eye strain,
the presence of fungus, formaldehyde, carbon
monoxide, ozone from the use of printers and fax
machines, buildings with poor ventilation.
How it is treated?
.It can be treated by allergic medications that may
help to treat itchy eyes, nose, and skin and asthma
medications to treat wheezing and other breathing
difficulties. Some steps like Use cleaning products
with low fumes and no fragrances, Vacuum regularly
to remove dust, change out air filters every couple of
month, Update computer monitors and other display
systems, consider investing in LED or blue lights for
less energy output.
Can it be prevented?
You can reduce the risk by taking breaks to
go outside the building, opening windows to
get some fresh air, installing air purifier, using
caution with any indoor chemicals, such as
bleach and insecticides
