Unless we live a zero-waste lifestyle, there is always
room for improvement when it comes to taking care
of the planet. One of the most important things we
can do to protect our environment is to find ways to
reduce waste and move towards a more waste-free
lifestyle. While the abstract idea of reducing one’s
waste can be overwhelming, a great place to start is
within the comfort of your own home. Little changes
such as switching to cloth bags instead of plastic
ones or making a concerted efforts to recycle cans
and bottles can make a big difference in your waste
output.
Given below are the ten simple
changes we can make to reduce
waste in our homes:
1 .SHOP ECO-FRIENDLY WITH REUSABLE BAGS
Always carry a reusable grocery bags while shopping.
Cloth or netted vegetable sacks (which are available for
cheap all over the internet, or made easily from old
clothes at home) can hold produce rather than plastic
bags. They can significantly help to reduce the number
of plastic bags collecting in our landfills.
2 .DITCH DISPOSABLES IN THE KITCHEN
Plastic wraps, tin foil a plastic zip bags may be
convenient- but they create a lot of waste. Try using a
silicone baking sheet in place of tinfoil. While cleaning,
swap out paper towels and single-use wipes for
microfibre cloths we can wash and reuse.
3 .SAY NO TO DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES AND
COFFEE CUPS
Instead of plastic water bottles use stainless steel
water bottles at home or while travelling, steel water
bottles can be used for a longer period of time and are
not harmful. At the same time, for coffee on the go, use
a travel mug. It’s just convenient, and save money too.
4 .REDUCE FOOD WASTE
Reducing food waste is a great way to reduce waste in
our homes. Take a habit of noting the expiry dates of
food in your fridge and planning your meals accordingly.
If food goes bad, compost it. Composting transforms
organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.
5 .LEARN TO REPAIR RATHER THAN DISCARD
It is always better to recycle things rather than
throwing them away. Instead of buying loads of cheap,
disposable stuff, try to buy a few high quality items and
after use, repair them when required.
6 .STOP USING DISPOSABLE PLATES
Even if washing the dishes is the bane of your
existence, the waste created by paper plates and
plastic utensils isn’t worth it. Stop resorting to paper
and plastic and get those hands dirty.
7 .START COMPOSTING
Everyday a large amount of what we throw into the
trash could be composted and returned to the earth. If
you have a bin, you can easily start a compost that
could be feed back into garden.
8 .MAKE A MEAL PLAN
Making a meal plan makes more sense than throwing
the excess food in the waste bin. It is always suggested
to have a proper meal plan that what has to be cooked,
when and in what quantity. Meal plan helps to reduce
wastage of food.
9 .FIND A SPACE FOR OLD FURNITURE
Create a small space in your home where you can keep
the furniture that are not in use. This will help to make
your home look more spacious and clutter free.
10 .REGULAR CLEANING
Regular cleaning of home plays a vital role in reducing
waste in your home. It will ensure less wastage of
things as you will keep checking things on a regular
basis.
