• If a reader has watched Back to the Future Part III, which is set in 1885, then they will 
have seen what arcades were like back then. In the past, the most exciting 
entertainment options were shooting galleries, ball toss games, fortunetellers, and 
automatons that played music. The first coin-operated devices appeared in the 1920s, 
and by the 1930s, wooden pinball machines had joined the market. The birth of the 
entertainment arcade saw the introduction of games like skeeball, basketball 
attractions, and other tests of manual dexterity. While these early versions of arcades 
lacked the electrical light and sound presentations that became commonplace, there 
was no denying that they were the contemporary precursors of the genre.

• Skee-Ball, which was created in 1909, has been around for more than a century, and 
although the title of "the original arcade game" is still up for debate, it can't be denied 
that it has been around for quite a long. Shooting galleries have been around longer 
than organized sports. Grand Prix, Duck Hunt, and Periscope were among the titles that 
started a trend towards entirely electronic, "real" arcade games.

• Arcade Prize Vending Machines developed from a tiny subset of consumer electronics 
entertainment towards the end of the 1970s and became a separate business. Atari's 
Breakout, which gave rise to many clones and was one of the most-played games of its 
time, was undoubtedly one of the most significant games of this period. First-person 
viewpoint games like Road Race and Night Driver continued to develop. Still, no one 
could have predicted the acceleration that would propel arcades into what is now 
referred to as the Golden Age of gaming.
