Origin  It is believed that the playing cards were first invented in China in 9th century AD, and comprised of only 30 cards.  They were originally printed on materials such as wood, paper or even bones.  Eventually, it gained popularity and spread to India (as 13 card rummy), Persia and European countries. 2. Why 53 Cards in a Deck?  Although a clear answer to this is not yet known, the number of cards have transitioned from 20 to 36, 40, 48 and then 52.  However, the 52 set became more popular and spread easily across the world.
