1.1. Purpose
The purpose of this Functional Requirements Specification (FRS) document is to define the 
functional requirements specifically for the Learner (Student) interface and functionalities of
the Learning Management System (LMS). This document outlines what the system must 
enable learners to do to effectively engage with course content, track their progress, 
communicate, and achieve their learning objectives. It focuses on delivering a user-friendly 
and engaging learning experience, inspired by platforms like

This FRS covers all functionalities directly accessible and utilized by the "Learner" user role 
within the LMS. It details the interactions between learners and the system for course 
consumption, progress tracking, communication, and basic profile management.

The LMS, from the learner's perspective, will be an intuitive and accessible platform (web 
and mobile applications) that provides a seamless environment for consuming educational 
content. It will act as a centralized hub where students can discover, enroll in, learn from, 
and track their progress across various online courses.
2.2. Product Functions (High-Level for Learner)
The LMS will offer the following primary functions for learners:
 Account Management: Registering, logging in, and managing personal profiles.
 Course Discovery: Browse, searching, and previewing courses.
 Learning Experience: Accessing various content formats, participating in live 
sessions.
 Assessment & Feedback: Completing quizzes, submitting assignments, and viewing 
results.
 Progress Monitoring: Tracking course completion and personal achievements.
 Engagement: Interacting with instructors and peers via discussions and messaging.
 Certification: Receiving digital certificates upon course completion.
2.3. User Characteristics (Learner/Student)
 Description: Individuals who enroll in courses to gain knowledge or skills.

navigating online platforms, and using mobile applications.

3. Specific Requirements - Learner Side
This section details the specific functions and features the LMS must provide for the 
"Learner" user role.
3.1. User Account Management
 FR-UM-001: User Registration:
o The system SHALL allow new users to register via email/password.
o The system SHALL support quick registration via social media accounts 
(Google, Facebook).
o The system SHALL send a confirmation email upon successful registration.
o The system SHALL support OTP-based registration/login.
 FR-UM-002: User Login/Authentication:
o The system SHALL allow learners to log in using their registered credentials.
o The system SHALL provide a "Forgot Password" functionality.
o The system SHALL support Single Sign-On (SSO) for registered social accounts.
 FR-UM-003: User Profile Management:
o Learners SHALL be able to view and edit their profile information (e.g., name, 
email, profile picture, password).
o Learners SHALL be able to update their notification preferences.
o Learners SHALL be able to view their enrolled courses, progress, and earned 
certificates from their profile.
3.2. Course Discovery & Enrolment
 FR-CDE-001: Course Browse & Search:
o The system SHALL allow learners to browse courses by category, instructor, 
and price.
o The system SHALL provide a search bar for finding courses by keywords (title, 
description).
o The system SHALL display course cards with essential information (title, 
instructor, price, rating).
 FR-CDE-002: Course Details Page:
o The system SHALL display a detailed course page including:
 Course description, objectives, and prerequisites.
 Instructor profile.
 Course curriculum/table of contents.
 Free preview lessons (if available).
 Pricing information and payment options.
 Student testimonials/reviews.
 FR-CDE-003: Course Enrollment & Purchase:
o Learners SHALL be able to enroll in free courses directly.
o For paid courses, learners SHALL be directed to a secure checkout page.
o The system SHALL allow learners to apply discount codes during checkout.
o The system SHALL provide a clear summary of the purchase before 
confirmation.
o The system SHALL issue a confirmation email upon successful 
enrollment/purchase.
3.3. Content Consumption & Learning Experience
 FR-CCL-001: Intuitive Course Player:
o The system SHALL provide a dedicated, user-friendly course player for all 
lesson types.
o The player SHALL include navigation to previous/next lessons, progress 
indicators.
 FR-CCL-002: Multimedia Content Playback:
o The system SHALL support seamless streaming of video content with 
adjustable playback speed, quality settings, and full-screen mode.
o The system SHALL support playback of audio lessons.
o The system SHALL display and allow navigation through document-based 
lessons (PDF, PPT, DOC).
 FR-CCL-003: Live Class Participation:
o Learners SHALL be able to join scheduled live classes directly from the course 
player or their dashboard.
o The system SHALL provide functionality to participate in live chat, Q&A, and 
polls during live sessions.
o The system SHALL allow learners to access recordings of past live sessions.
 FR-CCL-004: Content Download (if enabled):
o If enabled by the instructor, learners SHALL be able to download specific 
course resources (e.g., PDFs, assignment templates).
 FR-CCL-005: Resume Learning:
o The system SHALL automatically save a learner's progress within each lesson 
and course.
o Learners SHALL be able to resume a course exactly from where they left off.
3.4. Assessment & Feedback
 FR-AF-001: Quiz Attempt & Review:
o Learners SHALL be able to attempt multiple-choice, true/false, and other 
objective quizzes.
o The system SHALL provide immediate feedback for objective questions 
(correct/incorrect answers, explanations).
o Learners SHALL be able to review their quiz attempts and scores.
 FR-AF-002: Assignment Submission:
o Learners SHALL be able to view assignment instructions and download 
templates (if provided).
o Learners SHALL be able to submit assignments (text entry, file uploads).
o The system SHALL provide confirmation of successful assignment submission.
 FR-AF-003: View Grades & Feedback:
o Learners SHALL be able to view their scores/grades for quizzes and 
assignments.
o Learners SHALL be able to view instructor feedback on their submitted 
assignments.
3.5. Progress Tracking & Certification
 FR-PTC-001: Learner Dashboard:
o Learners SHALL have a personalized dashboard displaying:
 List of all enrolled courses.
 Progress percentage for each course.
 Quick links to resume learning.
 Upcoming live classes or assignment deadlines.
 Notifications/Announcements.
 FR-PTC-002: Course Progress Indicator:
o Each lesson and section within a course SHALL have a clear indicator (e.g., 
checkmark) showing completion status.
o The overall course progress bar SHALL dynamically update as lessons are 
completed.
 FR-PTC-003: Course Completion & Certificate Generation:
o The system SHALL automatically mark a course as complete once all required 
lessons and assessments are finished.
o Upon completion, the system SHALL automatically generate a digital course 
completion certificate.
o Learners SHALL be able to view, download (PDF), and potentially share their 
certificates directly from the platform.
3.6. Communication and Community
 FR-CC-001: Course-Specific Discussions:
o Learners SHALL be able to access and participate in a dedicated discussion 
forum or Q&A section for each enrolled course.
o Learners SHALL be able to post new questions/topics and reply to existing 
ones.
o Learners SHALL be able to follow discussions and receive notifications for new
replies.
 FR-CC-002: Announcements Viewing:
o Learners SHALL be able to view course-specific announcements from their 
instructors.
o Learners SHALL be able to view platform-wide announcements from the 
administrators.
o Announcements SHALL be clearly visible on the learner dashboard or a 
dedicated announcements page.
 FR-CC-003: Direct Messaging (Optional):
o The system SHOULD allow learners to send direct messages to their 
instructors (if enabled by the instructor).
 FR-CC-004: Notifications System:
o The system SHALL send automated notifications to learners for:
 New course enrollments.
 Upcoming live classes.
 Assignment due dates.
 Quiz results.
 New announcements.
 Replies to their discussion posts.
o Notifications SHALL be delivered via email and in-app/mobile push 
notifications.
o Learners SHALL be able to manage their notification preferences from their 
profile.
3.7. Payment & Checkout (Learner Perspective)
 FR-PM-001: Secure Checkout Process:
o The system SHALL provide a secure and encrypted checkout process for 
purchasing courses.
o Learners SHALL be able to select from available payment methods (e.g., 
credit/debit card, digital wallets).
 FR-PM-002: Transaction Confirmation:
o Upon successful payment, the system SHALL display a confirmation message 
and automatically enroll the learner in the course.
o A purchase receipt/invoice SHALL be sent to the learner's registered email.
3.8. Mobile Accessibility
 FR-MA-001: Responsive Web Design:
o The LMS web interface SHALL be fully responsive, adapting seamlessly to 
various screen sizes (desktop, tablet, mobile phones).
 FR-MA-002: Native Mobile Applications:
o The system SHALL provide dedicated native mobile applications for iOS and 
Android platforms.
o Mobile apps SHALL offer core learner functionalities: course access, content 
consumption, progress tracking, notifications, and basic communication.
o Mobile apps SHALL support offline viewing of downloaded content (if 
enabled).

 NFR-PER-001: Performance:
