Warning Sign: Warning signs are used when potential hazards aren't as severe or immediate as
those in areas that require danger signs. Although there is the possibility of serious injury or
even death, it is not as likely as areas that require warning signs. OSHA requires these signs to
be placed on a white background with black letters or diagrams.
Caution Sign: Caution is the last of the three major classifications. Caution signs are used for
areas that may cause minor or moderate injury. These signs are used to warn people not to fall
victim to serious injury or death. These signs must have OSHA-required yellow background and
black lettering.
Notice sign: blue signs with white text are used to communicate other information that is not
directly related to safety. If there are flammable liquids, a "no smoking" sign might be attached
to a warning sign. A blue no smoking sign indicates that the prohibited act is not for safety
reasons.
Safety instruction sign: Safety instructions signs have a background of green with white text.
They are informative but also related to safety. These signs are most commonly used for first
aid.
