 The ac power supply is a device 
that provides alternating current to 
a load. The ac power supply 
converts line voltage, typically 120 
or 240 volts, into a lower voltage 
required by the load.
In most cases, the ac power supply is a 
transformer that steps down the voltage 
and steps up the current to match the 
needs of the load. For example, a typical 
computer requires 5 volts at 1 A to 
operate.

The voltage applied across the 
secondary winding of an ac-to-dc 
transformer is determined by the ratio 
of turns in each coil and its distance 
from the core (the magnetic field it 
generates).
 The current applied across each 
primary coil is determined by its 
number of turns and its distance from 
the core (the amount of 
electromagnetic force generated).
Stepdown transformer: A stepdown 
transformer reduces line voltage to 
lower voltages needed by certain 
devices such as computers, televisions 
and other household appliances. 
AC power supplies are used to convert 
the ac voltage coming from the wall 
outlet into the dc voltage needed by 
electronic devices. Most electronic 
devices require a certain voltage to 
operate, and most of them use a 12V DC 
power supply.
