The use of military power supplies is important in the US military for various reasons. One of these reasons is to extend operational mobility by decreasing the weight of power supplies needed. Another reason why it is important to have military power supplies which are lightweight and portable; this allows soldiers on foot or with limited means of transportation to carry heavier loads, thus increasing their effectiveness on the battlefield. Also, some modern electronics require specific types of power sources aside from traditional household current (AC) in order to function properly at all times while submerged in water or extremely hot or cold temperatures.

If soldiers require uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
devices that can maintain constant operation during
prolonged emergencies, they will also need more readily
available generators for this purpose.
The function of the military power supplies is to
convert fuel into energy for use in munitions and
other weapons. It also provides outside power so
that equipment can be used by soldiers.
Military power supply devices, such as
generators and UPS systems, are required on all
ships and aircraft for various reasons:
Maintenance of communications –one-way communication is
possible without an operational generator or UPS system, but
this would greatly limit what information could be
sent/received; energy is needed for phone lines, radios, GPS
tracking devices, etc.
Sustained warfighting capability" –If a ship or aircraft runs out of fuel it will
not be able to sustain operations for very long- "Protection from attack" –
ships and aircraft need to be able to maneuver quickly, activate defenses
such as missiles, torpedoes, etc., and communicate with other ships/crafts-
"Training" –practice drills are only effective if the equipment is powered
for maximum use
