Smart intersections are the intersections equipped with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. These are increasingly being used because they have benefits for traffic safety. The rollout of smart intersections is increasing in popularity as cities look for ways to reduce congestion and improve transit efficiency

Smart Intersection

Smart Intersection It is already possible to see the future car technology that promotes the model of autonomous driving. This technology, referred to as V2X, will help prevent multiple car accidents each day. By making use of this technology, you can see how smart intersections‐ equipped with V2X‐ will save lives from traffic accidents. In the United States, 40% of all collisions occur at intersections. A quarter of all traffic related deaths and about half of all injuries take place at an intersection. Intersection safety is a major challenge that’s currently being tackled and is considered a top priority on the local, state and federal levels. But how is it possible to tackle thousands of intersections? The cost and effort can be endless. Smart intersections equipped with V2X communication technology are among the solutions that should be on your radar. With the advent of driverless cars, there are already many challenges ahead. V2X technology can address some, but not all. By connecting vehicles to traffic lights, roads and other road users, more safety can be ensured, while traffic conditions will be optimized. This is how smart intersections can keep us all safe. Fortunately, in the era of big data, we have enough information to produce reliable statistic results and find the most dangerous intersections – the ones with the highest number of collisions, injuries and fatalities. Focusing on a short list of the most dangerous intersections is much easier and cost effective. More than 2 million people are injured every year in the USA because drivers are distracted or don’t see pedestrians, bicyclists or other cars at intersections. This number is more than all deaths from fires, floods, tornadoes, lightning, hurricanes and earthquakes combined! How does this happen? Department of Transportation studies showed that 46% of smart intersection crashes occurred on roads with no traffic signal while 42% occurred on roads with traffic signals. The interesting part of this is that of these crashes occurred at night-time when visibility was limited. Therefore drivers do not use their brakes enough to avoid a crash. Deploying V2X based solutions in the most dangerous intersections will assist in reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities. With a relatively low investment, early adopters of V2X technology will reap immediate value, increasing their own safety and the safety of their surroundings.
