With V2X communication technology, drivers communicate with each other to avoid crashes. V2V communication assists drivers in avoiding crashes, while V2I communication alerts drivers to traffic incidents and changes in road conditions so they can take appropriate action. Together, these revolutionary safety advances enable cars to "talk" to each other and the surrounding infrastructure to prevent accidents.
V2X Communication Technology
V2X Communication Technology V2X communication technology will allow vehicles to communicate with one another, the traffic infrastructure and the cloud. This will enable access to critical safety features such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) warnings of imminent collisions, traffic sign recognition technologies that leverage information from road side units to avoid hazards and real-time incident alerts to warn other drivers about collisions or obstacles in the roadway ahead. V2X system dramatically improves safety and mobility. With an awareness of other vehicles on the road, the system alerts drivers to potential risks as they happen. On-board sensors use GPS signals to determine a vehicle's location on the road and help predict potential hazards by "seeing around corners" or behind large vehicles. The V2X Communication Technology also can use alternative transmitters such as cellular signals from nearby cell towers to broadcast traffic information from surrounding areas to the car. This helps drivers make more informed decisions about where they are going and allows them to plan a route. By securely exchanging information such as speed, acceleration, position and direction of travel, road safety can be significantly improved. Drivers get alerts about dangers in their path. Collisions on our roads can be dramatically reduced; estimations show that approximately 80% of accidents will be avoided. Improved mobility is also a direct result of this technology. Vehicles will be coordinating their maneuvers as they synchronize to avoid traffic jams or to drive through a green wave. V2X also provides real-time accurate data of vehicle status for accurate future movement prediction, and intention, such as turn lights. This way traffic flows much better, resulting in less time in traffic for everyone. In autonomous vehicles, V2X complements the information coming from other sensors, as it is the only available sensor in non- line-of-sight scenarios and works in rough weather and poor lighting conditions. V2X communication is heading to mass- market adoption as the world’s largest OEMs announced intentions to equip their new car models with the technology. A few years down the road, we will not understand how we ever drove without it!
