Winter tyres are available as both studded and non-studded. The studded tyres are the original winter tyres, which is why many older people see them as the only real alternative. The development has however gone forward and the non-studded tyres are nowadays as good as the studded on snow and it is only on ice that the studded have slightly better performance. So if you live in areas that have a lot of ice during the winter season, then the studded might be a better option. This can often be the case if you live in costal areas or next to very big lakes that tend to have more icy conditions. • If you are not so bother with icy conditions, then you will be fine with
non-studded tyres that have the advantage that they are allowed in
all the countries and have fewer restrictions. If you travel between
different countries you don’t have to worry as they can be used in all
countries without limitation. This does not however make them ideal
for summer use. These are tyres intended for winter use and should
be used in combination with a set of summer tyres. These tyres will
perform better than summer tyres when the temperatures drop
below zero degrees Celsius. So you should change to the studded tyres
as soon as the temperatures start dropping and then change to
summer tyres when the winter weather has passed for good.

• The non-studded tyres uses unique tread design to create
mechanical traction but will also often incorporate some grip
particles like cryo-crystals to enhance the traction. This will help
to provide good grip on both snow and ice. Another important
feature about the tyres is that the tyres will need to be able to
prevent slushplaning, so that the grooves can push away the water
mixed snow, so that the tyres don’t lose contact with the road
surface. Slushplaning is similar to aquaplaning that happens during
wet conditions.

• So when you get a set of premium non-studded tyres, then you
have very good flexibility and winter tyres that can safely handle
all the conditions that you will face during the winter season, so
that you can safely drive without having to worry, as long as you
have mounted the tyres in time before the winter weather arrives.
