Laser URS Surgery Doctor Explains Ureteroscopy Procedure
What is ureteroscopy?
Ureteroscopy is an outpatient procedure used to treat stones in the ureters. It can
also be used to assess and treat other causes of kidney blockage or blood in the
urine, says the doctor of laser URS surgery in Kolkata.
Ureteroscopy is performed using an ureteroscope, which is a long, thin tube with
an eyepiece on one end and a tiny lens and a light on the other. In general, there
are two approaches to ureteroscopy for stone removal:
1.If the stone is small, the doctor will insert a scope into the ureter to extract it.
The scope used in this procedure will have a small basket at the end of a wire that
is threaded through an additional channel in the ureteroscope. The stone is
collected in the basket.
2.In larger stones, the doctor will extend a flexible fibre through the scope up to
the stone. The doctor will break the stone into pieces small enough to be passed
out of the body with urine using a laser beam shining through the scope.
The doctor will determine the best ureteroscopy treatment option for the patient
based on the stone’s location, size and composition, says the
TURP doctor in Kolkata.
Is ureteroscopy a good option for me?
If one has a ureteral stone near the bladder, particularly in the lower half of
the ureter, ureteroscopy is the most effective treatment. Pregnant women,
obese patients and those with a blood clotting disorder can also benefit
from ureteroscopy.
What should I do to prepare for an ureteroscopy?
One should talk with their doctor if there are any special instructions for
preparing for an ureteroscopy. Patients are usually advised not to eat anything
before the procedure.
Before the procedure, one may be asked to provide a urine sample to check for
infection. If this is the case, one may be told not to urinate for an hour before
the procedure.
What happens during an ureteroscopy?
The surgery is performed while one is asleep. The doctor will insert an
ureteroscope into the bladder and ureter to look for urinary tract problems,
says the doctor of ureter stone laser treatment in Kolkata.
What should I expect following an ureteroscopy?
Because one will be sedated during the procedure, they should arrange for a
ride home.
The doctor can prescribe antibiotics for the first two days following the
procedure to prevent infection. Infection symptoms include fever, chills and
worsening pain. One should inform their doctor if they notice any of these
symptoms.
Most ureteroscopy patients experience mild to moderate pain that can be
controlled with medication. To relieve mild pain, one should:
Drink sufficient water for the next two days
Take a warm bath with the doctor’s permission
Apply a warm, damp washcloth over the urethral opening
Other side effects include kidney and bladder cramps and burning sensation
while urinating. Urine can appear pink or red and these symptoms can last
until the stent is removed, says the doctor of
urine infection treatment in Kolkata.
