Australia Increases Skilled Migration Target under Labor Market Agreement
                     Australia’s migration level planning for 2022-23 brings a new ray of hope for 
immigration hopefuls planning to settle in Australia. 
The government of Australia increased the 2022-23 program to 195,000 after the 2021-22 program could not bring 
in enough skilled workers— some 16,500 less than the actual planned level, i.e., 160,000.

While the Department of Home Affairs indicates the pandemic to be the reason behind this shortfall, people believe 
it to be vague, as 2020-21 delivered the target when the pandemic was at its highest peak. The shortfall in 
delivering the 2021-22 program has created a severe shortage of skilled workers in Australia. 
The 2022-23 Migration Program gives the lion’s share to the skilled 
stream — at 142,500, the most significant share in history. This year’s 
migration program aims at easing the critical workforce shortage in 
Australia and improving the country’s economy.
Ministerial Directions Number 100 indicates the priority processing for 
the following categories:
• Healthcare or teaching-related occupations.
• Visa applications where the applicant has received a 
nomination from an approved sponsor.
• Visa applications related to domains must be carried out in a 
designated regional area.
• For permanent and provisional visa subclasses, visa 
applications that count towards the Migration Program, 
excluding the Subclass 188 – Business Innovation and 
Investment (Provisional) – visa.
The ministry also suggests giving priority to Australia PR visa applicants with trades and technical 
skills to assist with shortages in the construction industry.

The government has increased the offshore migration in 2022-23 compared to 2021-22. These skilled 
newcomers will likely migrate to Australia by the end of the first quarter of 2023. The Australian labor
