Recently, the Federal Government of Australia conducted a Jobs and Skills Summit in
Canberra, Although the Australian economy is doing well despite two years of border
closures, many Australian employers have difficulty recruiting the right talent. The country
has recently increased the Australia PR visa cap to 195,000 in 2022-23 to help ease
widespread, critical skills shortages. Forget about super-specialty roles; many Australian
employers cannot fill basic positions filled by international students and backpackers.
Australia, on 1st and 2nd September 2022. Many prominent stakeholders, industry leaders,
business groups, politicians, and working unions witnessed the two-day meetings and
panel discussions. The new Government organized the summit to discuss the current
economic performance and how Australia can deal with the severe shortage of skilled
workers across many sectors.
The current Government realized that the economy could not prosper without enough
skilled foreign workers. The summit acted as a platform for the Government to express
gratitude to skilled workers and international students for their remarkable contributions to
the Australian economy. Two years of border closure has brought Australia to this situation
where the country needs more workers to keep businesses afloat.
During the Jobs and Skills Summit, the Government announced several steps Australia will
take to strengthen and expand the economy through Skilled Migration Programs. The new
announcements will change the shape of immigration Australia for the next few years.

Increase in the permanent Migration Program planning levels
One of the most significant announcements of the Jobs and Skills summit was the
increase in the permanent migration levels for 2022-23. Home affairs minister Clare O'Neil
confirmed that the Government intends to increase the permanent migration number to
195,000 people, up from 160,000. A total of 34,000 visas have been allocated to regional
areas.
This could mean thousands of new permanent residents will arrive in Australia and
address labor shortages.
Preference for permanent residency pathways over temporary visas
The Government is committed to offering permanent visas to people living and working in
Australia on temporary visas. Time and again, these temporary workers have urged the
Government that rather than inviting someone to arrive and work here, they should be given
a pathway to stay in Australia permanently.
