Getting an education from a Canadian university or
designated learning institution is an excellent way
for individuals planning to settle in Canada.
Completing studies in Canada will benefit you,
especially when you check points for Canada PR,
as you secure more points than those without
Canadian credentials.
If you are currently studying in Canada and are
thinking of starting to work there, you must know
that the process of switching your study permit to a
work permit depends on where you are in the
program.
Work while studying in Canada
As an international student in Canada, you are only
eligible to work part-time or full-time during breaks.
Study permit holders can work up to 20-hours in a
week and full-time during scheduled holidays. You
need not apply for a separate work permit to work in
Canada; your study permit automatically grants you the
right to work in Canada.
Specific educational programs in Canada require
students to complete a co-op or internship work
placement as part of their program. International
students fulfilling the basic requirements of a co-op or
internship may be eligible to work full-time in Canada.
Switching to a work permit AFTER completing your education in Canada
After completing your studies at a Canadian designated learning institute (DLI), you may apply for a
Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to three years. The most significant benefit of having a PGWP is
that it allows the holder to work anywhere in Canada, under any employer.
You have 180 days to apply for an open work permit upon meeting the eligibility requirements. You can
submit the PGWP application either in Canada or overseas. Working in Canada gives you valuable
experience that helps you secure high Canada visa points while applying for permanent residency.
Switching to a work permit BEFORE completing your studies in Canada
If you no longer want to continue your studies in Canada but still want to work. In that case, you need to
obtain a work permit and go through the Labor Market Impact Assessment process. For this, you must
find a valid full-time job offer in Canada with an employer willing to sponsor your application and an
LMIA.
An LMIA proves that the Canadian employer could not find a permanent resident or citizen for a specific
job vacancy. Such applicants get a closed work permit, meaning they are tied to a single employer, role,
and job location.
Please note that your study permit will no longer be valid if you stop studying. In that case, you must
appraise the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) about the termination of your
studies, or else you’ll have to leave Canada while awaiting the decision of your work permit application.
