The most significant part about a skilled migration visa is that it 
allows you to live and work in Australia with no restrictions. As a 
skilled migrant, you can include your dependents to accompany 
you to Australia. However, suppose you are state/regionally 
sponsored. In that case, you must live and work in the region that 
nominated you for a specific duration before you make the next 
move somewhere in Australia.

Types of skilled migration visas
Australia’s skilled migration visas include the following categories:
 
Australia Subclass 189- Skilled Independent Visa
 
As an independent visa, subclass 189 gives you the freedom and flexibility to live and work anywhere 
in Australia. This stream is for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by a state/territory 
government or an eligible family member. 
Eligibility requirements for the subclass 189 visa
 
• Demonstrate relevant experience in one of the occupations featured on 
the list of eligible occupations. 
• Have a positive assessment of your nominated occupation.
• Submit an Expression of Interest and be invited to apply for 189 subclass 
Australia.
• Secure at least 65 points on the points calculator system
• Be aged between 18 and 44 years at the time of application submission
• Demonstrate competent English skills
• Meet health and character requirements

SUBCLASS 190- SKILLED-
NOMINATED VISA
190 visa is another points-tested stream for those who wish to 
live and work in Australia. You must secure a nomination from 
an Australian state or a territory government to qualify for the 
subclass 190 visa. 
E ligibility requirements for the subclass 190 visa
 
• Demonstrate relevant experience in one of the occupations 
featured on the list of eligible occupations. 
• Have a positive assessment of your nominated occupation.
• Submit an Expression of Interest and be invited to apply
• Be nominated by a state or territory agency in Australia

SUBCLASS 491- SKILLED WORK 
REGIONAL PROVISIONAL VISA
Skilled Work Regional Provisional Subclass 491 allows you and your 
family to live and work in a designated area of Australia for five 
years. Subclass 491 is a temporary visa, which you may switch to 
permanent residence after three years of living in the designated 
regional area. 
Applicants for this visa must be nominated by:
• An Australian state or territory government agency or
• Sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a 
designated regional area.

SUBCLASS 186- EMPLOYER 
NOMINATED SPONSORED VISA
Australia 186 visa is a permanent residency pathway that requires an 
applicant to obtain a sponsorship from an Australian employer.
To qualify for this visa:
• You must choose an occupation on the 186 Visa Occupations List 
• Meet English language requirement with score of 6 in each 
component.
• A maximum age requirement is 45 at the time of application.
