Australia’s General Skilled Migration Program gives tremendous opportunities to
skilled foreign workers to move permanently to Australia. Australia is a popular
destination among talented professionals, and the GSM category permits foreign
nationals to choose from a wide range of visa options to apply for permanent
residency in Australia.
The skilled stream of the migration program is designed to attract highly talented
workers who have the potential to make significant contributions to the Australian
economy. Skilled migrants play a substantial role in the Australian workforce, helping
boost the economy and take positions where no Australian workers are available.
The General Skilled Migration program also has a considerable role in regional
development by providing enough talent that cannot be sourced locally in the form of
subclass 190 visa. The GSM category also supports investment in regional areas of
Australia.
If you want to work and live in Australia, you must prove your eligibility for one of the
following visa categories:
• Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)
• Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
• Skilled Regional Visa (subclass 491)
Skill Select vs. General Skilled Migration
The General Skilled Migration Program has two categories- Points-Test and
Employer-Sponsored.
Skill Select is a part of the GSM program. Though its requirement is only
restricted to some visa categories, Australian employers often use it to
understand the skill level they need to fill a specific job position. Skill Select
is used for a Points-Tested Skilled Migration Visa, wherein an applicant must
first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). An Expression of Interest is an
online system for selecting and inviting skilled migrants to Australia.
Employer-sponsored visas do not require you to submit an EOI.
While registering your interest, Skill Select asks you about some basic
information, including personal background, occupation, work experience,
and education. This EOI is accessed by Australian employers or state and
territory governments. If your EOI matches their economic and
demographic needs, they send you an invitation or nomination for a visa.
Types of General Skilled Migration Visas
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) - As the name suggests, the Skilled
Independent Visa subclass 189 visa does not require you to have any state or
territory sponsor you. It is a permanent residency visa and is one of the most popular
pathways used for skilled migrants to come to live and work in Australia.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) - The Skilled Nominated Visa is also
referred to as the state-nominated visa. The subclass 190 visa stream is for skilled
workers who are nominated by a state or a territory in Australia. It’s a permanent
residency stream that allows holders to live and work in Australia and eventually
apply for citizenship after some years.
The beneficiaries of subclass 190 visa must live in the nominated state or territory
for at least two years before moving anywhere in Australia.
Skilled Worker Regional Subclass 491 visa - The Skilled Worker Regional visa is
a temporary visa that may lead to permanent residency in Australia. It requires you
to be nominated by a state or territory government or an eligible relative (PR holder
or citizen). The beneficiaries of subclass 491 visa must live in a designated area for
at least five years.
