Do you want to secure a Canada permanent
resident visa for your parents or grandparents? Are
you eager to live with them in Canada? If yes, you
must have probably heard about Canada's Parents
and Grandparents Program. Under this program,
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can
sponsor their parents and grandparents to live with
them in Canada.
The program aims to reunite families in Canada. So far, in 2022, Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have successfully invited 23,100 potential
sponsors to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Sponsored parents and
grandparents will receive permanent residency status in Canada and eventually apply
for citizenship.
This article describes the benefits, process, and eligibility requirements for the Canada
parents and grandparents program. Let's first talk about the benefits:
• Parents and grandparents arriving in Canada under this pathway enjoy the full
benefits of a Canada PR visa holder.
• Your parents can work in Canada.
• They are entitled to healthcare benefits.
• Get complete protection under Canadian law and the Charter of Rights and
Freedoms.
• Apply for citizenship after meeting the minimum eligibility criteria.
Who is eligible to sponsor their parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada?
To be eligible for the Parents and Grandparents Program, sponsors must:
• Demonstrate that they are the citizens of Canada, or permanent
residents, or registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
• Be 18 years of age or older;
• Have received an Invitation to apply;
• Must be legally residing in Canada
• Demonstrate sufficient funds to meet the financial needs of their
parents or grandparents in Canada.
The sponsor and the sponsored person(s) must also sign a sponsorship agreement
stating that:
• They will financially support the sponsored for 20 years (starting from the day
they migrate to Canada and become permanent residents); and
• They will repay any social assistance benefits paid to the sponsored family
members (if applicable) for a period of 20 years.
• If the sponsor lives in Quebec, they must sign an additional "undertaking"
with the province of Quebec
How much money do I need to sponsor my parents to Canada?
To be eligible for the Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program, the sponsor
must demonstrate a minimum income level to support themselves and their family
members. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has defined a parameter
called "Minimum Necessary Income," or MNI, to assess someone's financial ability to
support their family members. PGP applicants can only qualify to sponsor their family
members upon meeting the NMI requirements as per their family size.
Please look at the table below to understand the minimum income requirements for
the 2022 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP):
