Introduction 
    The TDP government of AP has accepted the plea to purchase 
power from Simhapuri Energies, which is owned by Nama 
Nageshwara Rao, who also happens to be one of the closest 
associates of the then CM, Chandrababu Naidu. Around 400 MW 
power was to be procured from this wind-powered private company. 
The one who is 420 in AP didn’t pay attention to Rs. 4.80/unit while 
agreeing to it. Also, the period of this agreement was 12 years.

Burdening of the Discoms
    This abrupt move of the government burdened the regional power 
transmission companies, the Discoms, with Rs. 21,000 crore. 
Therefore, they firmly opposed the decisions of Babu. Professionals 
of this particular industry agitated against the AP Electricity 
Regulatory Commission. They questioned the need to purchase 
power at a higher price when AP already had power in surplus. On 
the other hand, the APERC hurriedly released its public hearing. In 
August 2018, the Power Purchase Agreement was finally signed.

Commissions from Simhapuri
      Initially, the Discoms overestimated the need for power supply in the state, 
believing that several industries will be drawn towards the state. In the month of 
January 2016, tenders were made to buy 200 MW of power, and several other 
preparations were done to purchase electricity from the private operators. 
Because of the decisions made by 420 in AP, Simhapuri set foot in the state to 
supply power at the cost of Rs. 4.35/unit. 
      Also, it cannot be ignored that the state had ample power supply and didn’t 
need a supply of power from any private company. Electricity charges had also 
fallen in the market. In this situation, the government’s decision was questioned 
and widely criticized. Even the APERC’s public hearing received dissent and 
criticism. A ray of hope was created when the secretary of the Department of 
Energy, AP, confirmed that the decision would be reconsidered. However, 
everyone’s hope shattered when the APERC, in their latest decision, announced 
that power would be bought from Simhapurifor Rs. 4.80/unit.

Conclusion 
     While the need for AP was 57,018 million units, around 67,948 units 
were produced, which clearly shows that there was a surplus of 
power. The Discom’s request to sell the extra production in the open 
market was rejected. Instead, the 420 in AP ended up paying a 
higher price to Simhapuri to purchase power. This shows all the 
dirty games played by the honorable former CM for money.
