Overview of India’s Medical Device
Manufacturing Push
India has taken a major step toward healthcare self-reliance by
initiating domestic manufacturing of advanced medical devices. This
move reduces import dependency, strengthens local capabilities, and
improves access to high-end diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
Role of the PLI Scheme for Medical
Devices
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for medical devices was
launched by the Government of India in 2020 to promote indigenous
manufacturing. The scheme focuses on encouraging investment,
innovation, and large-scale production across critical medical device
segments.
Key Highlights of the PLI Medical
Device Scheme
With a total financial outlay of ₹3,420 crore, the scheme offers a 5%
incentive on incremental sales of domestically manufactured medical
devices. The production tenure spans from FY 2022–23 to FY 2026–27,
targeting sustained industrial growth.
Advanced Medical Devices Now
Manufactured in India
Under the scheme, India has started producing 44 high-end medical
devices previously dependent on imports. These include MRI machines,
Linear Accelerators, CT scanners, C-arms, mammography systems,
ultrasound machines, and other critical diagnostic equipment.
Milestones Achieved Under the
Initiative
A total of 19 greenfield manufacturing projects have been
commissioned. By September 2024, cumulative sales reached
₹8,039.63 crore, with exports contributing ₹3,844.01 crore,
demonstrating strong global demand for Indian-manufactured medical
devices.
Gujarat’s Contribution to Medical
Device Manufacturing
Gujarat has emerged as a key manufacturing hub with four greenfield
projects established under the PLI scheme. These facilities support the
production of stents, implants, heart valves, and catheter-based
medical devices, strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Impact on Healthcare, Exports, and
Self-Reliance
Domestic manufacturing of advanced medical devices enhances
patient access to critical technologies, reduces treatment costs, boosts
exports, and aligns with India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar
Bharat” initiatives in the healthcare sector.
Importance of Regulatory Compliance in
Advanced Manufacturing
Manufacturing high-risk and high-technology medical devices requires
strict compliance with regulatory and quality standards. Robust quality
management systems, regulatory approvals, and audit readiness are
essential to ensure patient safety and global market acceptance.
Conclusion & Reference
India’s successful production of 44 advanced medical devices marks a significant
milestone in building a self-reliant, export-oriented medical device industry.
Continued focus on regulatory compliance, quality systems, and innovation will
further strengthen India’s global position.
