London Sports History
London in Olympics
London has been a host for the Olympics games for three
times, over past 100 years. The first Olympic games held
in London was in 1908 at White City.
In 2005, it was selected to host the latest Olympic Games
to that took place in 2012.
London also hosted the Paralympics Games for the very
first time in 2012.
In 1934, it also hosted the Common Wealth games (then
known as British Empire Games) at White City Stadium
London And Football
There is a special place for football among the people of
London. It was originated before 1314, and since then it
has been a prime game played in London.
Interestingly, the credit for transforming it into organized
and refereed team football given to a school headmaster
from London in, the sixteenth century.
Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea are the famous
clubs that belong to England
Cricket
Cricket is the second most played and loved sport in London.
London has two Test cricket grounds named as Lord's and The
Oval.
The Lord's is also known as the Home of Cricket.
Rugby
Rugby was itself originated in England in the first half of the 19th
century.
England played its first international tournament with Scottland on
27 March 1871 in Edinburgh.
Harlequins and Saracens are the two rugby clubs from London.
Although there were two more clubs that played in London.
Golf
England has over 2,084 golf courses.
Golf was introduced to London during the Middle Ages and has
been a popular game since then.
It was known as cambuca during its early years of introduction
to the people of England.
Other Sports
Like the other major countries, England is also a host for many
other sports like Tennis, American Football, Field Hockey,
Basketball, Baseball, Cycling, etc.
It has got the two toplevel ice hockey teams, the London
Knights and the London Racers.
It has also hosted three roller derby leagues.
London hosts the London Marathon, in the month of in April
every year, one of the world's largest massparticipation
marathons.
The two games that is only played in
London and nowhere else
England has got its two unique games only played in England, one
is a kind of Old English skittles, that used to be popular in pubs
across South East England.
The other one is called the rugby netball. This was created by some
soldiers in 1he 1890s, and has been played on Clapham Common
Games that take place only during the summer, hosted by
International Netball Federation.
