❖ When Is Vishu kani Celebrated?
Vishu occurs on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam, which 
corresponds to April. The event heralds the start of the new agricultural season 
and is a celebration of harvest and community. The date of Vishu fluctuates from 
year to year due to the location of the sun.
On the day of Vishu, Keralites rise early to get a sight of Vishu Kani, an auspicious 
item made up of a cauldron filled with Kani-konna, or Indian laburnum, fruits, 
paddy stalks, fruits, gold jewellery, silver trinkets, and a picture of the Hindu God, 
Lord Krishna. To represent optimism and prosperity, a lamp, the Nilavilakku, is lit 
beside the cauldron.
Hundreds of pilgrims go to the Sabarimala and Guruvayur temples. Some 
devotees are given coins for visiting in the early hours of the morning. The elders 
of the household also provide 'Kaineettam' (money) to the children. The Vishu 
Sadhya, a lovely supper, is enjoyed by the family. The lunch includes 
mouthwatering foods like as beans thoran, tomato rasam, semiya payasam, and 
others.

❖ Date of Vishu Kani:
Kerala New Year, or Vishu kani, will be celebrated on April 15 (Friday) 
throughout the country's southern region. 
In Kerala, the ladies of the household will begin the day by praying and 
lighting the oil lamp at their home shrine.
❖ Significance of Vishu Kani 
According to legend, it is the day when Lord Krishna slew the demon Narakasura 
and ward off evil. It is also said to be the day of Surya Dev's return, according to 
certain myths. 
On this day, Lord Krishna idols, flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, and new 
clothing are put on the customary Vishu Kani. This day is also thought to bring 
wealth and to mark the start of fresh goals and progress. People commemorate 
the day with spiritual passion and splendour.
❖ How do you make Vishu Kani for the

in the family puja room by the mother or eldest woman in the home. A lot of 
thought goes into creating a suitable and auspicious Kanni.
The Akshatam, a rice and turmeric combination, is held in a medium-sized vessel 
called a Uruli (a traditional Kerala cookware). A newly cleaned Kerala sarang with 
golden borders (known as the kasavu pudava) is draped over it. 
A golden-colored, shapely cucumber (called kani vellari) is put with betel leaves, 
ripe areca nut (areca palm seed), ripe yellow mango, ripe jackfruit, and a 
particular sort of mirror with a long stem known as vaalkannadi (hand mirrors). 
The goddess is represented by the vaalkannadi in several regions of Kerala.
Another newly cleaned white fabric is folded into a fan-shaped fan and put into a 
kindi, a spouted metal puja vessel. 
The Vaal kannadi and fabric are placed in the kindi, and the entire arrangement is 
laid on the rice in the uruli. A little plate is filled with rice, flowers, and a penny. 
The entire kanni is built around a statue of Lord Vishnu or a picture of Lord 
Krishna. Kannikonna, a bright yellow flower, is utilised to adorn the arrangement. 
A bronze light is lit and put in the centre, in front of the kanni. On Vishu day, the 
head of the family gives money or coins as Vishu kaineettam.
Small lamp or deepams can also be used to decorate the arrangement. The light 
from the flame would cast a yellowish colour across the entire scene, creating a 
wonderful mood.
