This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including its early diagnosis, classification into three levels based on severity, and the support required at each stage. It highlights the symptoms seen in children across different levels, the challenges they face, and available treatment options. The potential of therapies, especially emerging stem cell treatments, is also discussed as a hopeful direction for autism management.

Autism
• Autism, or autism spectrum
disorder, is a brain
developmental disorder.
• Due to inadequate brain
development, individuals
show poor communication
skills.
• It is diagnosed by the age of 2
years.
Levels of Autism Disorder
• DSM-5 and ICD-11 have laid out three levels of disorder based on the
severity of:
a.Communication Skills
b.Repetitive behavior
Le• vEeacl h1 l eAvuetl irsemqu isryesm ap dtioffmerse nint acmhoiludnrte onf :s uRpepqourti rfero Smu ppapreonrtts or
caregivers.
• Limited initiation of social conversations.
• Poor response to social cues such as body language or facial
expressions.
• Repetitive behaviors exist but do not affect them significantly.
• Exhibit inflexibility in behavior that affects adaptability to the
environment.
• Might also show sensitivities to surrounding triggers like light or
sound.
• Requires little support and can function in a relatively independent
manner.
Level 2 Autism spectrum disorder
symptoms: Require Substantial Support
• Lack of social skills is apparent even in
the presence of support from parents
or caregivers.
• Difficulty in initiating interactions and
responding to conversations.
• Repetitive behaviors are frequent and
interfere with their routine activities.
• Difficulty in switching the routine tasks.
• Require substantial support from
parents or caregivers.
Level 3 Autism in toddlers: Require Very Substantial
Support
• Minimal interaction and response to
social cues.
• Increased tendency of isolation.
• Repetitive actions interrupt their
functioning in all aspects of life.
• Extreme difficulty in changing daily
tasks.
• Require very substantial support,
that is, complete reliance on a
caregiver for daily tasks.
Treatment and Challenges
• Autism affects the interaction skills of children, leading to their social
isolation.
• The mental well-being of such children is also affected, causing
depression and anxiety.
• Therapies such as speech therapy, behavior therapy, occupational
therapy, etc., have shown improvements.
• No definite cure exists for autism.
• Advances in stem cell therapy have shown promise for autism
treatment.
