Standing Up for Seniors: AHEPA
Senior Living Observes World Elder
Abuse Awareness Day 2026
Each year in June, communities across the globe recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
(WEAAD), a moment dedicated to raising awareness about the rights, dignity and safety of older
adults. First launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the
World Health Organization, WEAAD has grown into a globally recognized observance that calls
individuals, organizations and communities to take meaningful action. At AHEPA Senior Living, we
observe this day as a reaffirmation of our commitment to the well-being, safety and dignity of every
resident we serve.
Understanding Elder Abuse
Elder abuse is a complex and often hidden problem that affects millions of older adults every year. It
can take many forms, including physical, emotional and financial abuse, as well as neglect.
Too often, these abuses occur in silence, perpetrated by people the older adult knows or depends
on, and go unnoticed or unreported due to fear, isolation or cognitive decline.
The impact of elder abuse extends far beyond physical harm. Victims may experience depression,
anxiety or a diminished sense of self-worth. Chronic stress and mistreatment can worsen physical
health outcomes and accelerate cognitive decline. Financial exploitation, in particular, can strip older
adults of their savings and independence, leaving lasting consequences that are difficult to rectify.
Raising awareness is the first and most critical step in prevention. Only when communities
understand what elder abuse looks like, and feel empowered to speak up, can we truly work toward
eliminating it.
Recognizing the Signs
Because elder abuse often takes place behind closed doors, recognizing warning signs is essential.
Family members, neighbors, caregivers and community members all play a role in keeping older
adults safe. Some common indicators of elder abuse include:
• Unexplained physical injuries, bruises or changes in physical condition
• Sudden withdrawal from normal activities or social interactions
• Noticeable changes in financial situation or unusual account activity
• Signs of fear, anxiety or agitation around certain individuals
• Poor hygiene, inadequate nutrition or a neglected living environment
• Confusion about recent financial transactions or the signing of documents
If something does not feel right, it is important to speak up. Reporting concerns to local Adult
Protective Services or law enforcement can make a critical difference in the life of an older adult.
AHEPA Senior Living Communities in Action
Across our communities, AHEPA Senior Living observes Elder Abuse Awareness Month through
education, resident engagement and meaningful community partnerships. These efforts reflect our
belief that creating safe, supportive environments requires ongoing commitment from every member
of our organization Protecting the dignity, safety, and well-being of older adults is part of our mission.
This year, our communities acted in meaningful ways:
• Saraland, Alabama: Partnered with city leaders to secure a mayoral proclamation recognizing the
importance of preventing elder abuse.
• Cheektowaga, New York: Teamed up with AARP New York to help residents identify scams, prevent
fraud, and protect themselves from financial exploitation.
• Decatur, Georgia: Raised awareness through a creative educational campaign that provided
residents with multilingual resources and information.
Whether in the halls of city government, through community education, or by fighting scams that
target seniors, AHEPA Senior Living is proud to stand up for older adults.
We also work to foster a culture of trust and openness within our communities. When residents,
family members and staff feel comfortable raising concerns, we can address potential issues before
they escalate. That culture starts with education and is sustained by consistent, caring engagement
throughout the year.
Prevention Is a Community Responsibility
Preventing elder abuse is not the responsibility of any one person or organization. It requires a
coordinated effort from everyone. At AHEPA Senior Living, we see our role as an active participant in
that broader network of support.
By developing clear reporting methods, training staff to identify warning signs and cultivating resident
trust, we work to ensure that safety remains a top priority in every community we operate. We also
encourage residents and their families to stay informed about available resources, including local
Adult Protective Services, elder law attorneys and advocacy organizations that support older
Americans.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as an important reminder that our collective vigilance
matters.
When communities come together to protect older adults, the results are meaningful and lasting.
