An 8-speed cassette refers to the number of gears on the rear wheel of a bicycle. It
means that the cassette has 8 cogs or sprockets that are mounted on the free hub
body of the rear wheel. The chain wraps around these cogs to provide different gear
ratios for the rider.
The cassette is usually labelled with a range of
teeth, such as 11-32 or 12-25, which indicates the
number of teeth on the smallest and largest cogs.
A cassette with a larger range, such as 11-32, will
provide a wider range of gear ratios, while a
cassette with a smaller range, such as 12-25, will
provide closer gear ratios for smoother shifting.
An 8 speed cassette is common on older road bikes and entry-level mountain bikes, but it
has been largely replaced by 9-speed, 10-speed, and 11-speed cassettes on newer bikes.
However, it is still possible to find replacement 8 speed cassettes and chain rings for older
bikes that use this system.
