What is Road Tax?
Vehicle Road Tax is imposed by the 
respective state governments and further 
tax is` applicable to those individuals who 
avail state and national highways
Since the roads and highways belong to 
the government, the money collected from 
the taxes is utilised to maintain them with at 
attempt to improve the infrastructure of the

intervals and is levied by all states of the country 
in varying percentages. 
 This tax is to be paid by both two-wheelers and 
four-wheelers, and it is levied both on commercial 
and private vehicles. 
Vehicles used for personal use, mostly for them 
vehicle road is payable once but vehicles used for 
commercial purpose needs to renew road tax as 
and when required.
Vehicle road tax can either be paid once in a lifetime or 
renew road tax every year.
It totally depends on the state where the tax is being paid, 
for example in Delhi vehicle road tax is paid once during the 
time of registration.
If the owner of the vehicle uses the car in some other state, 
and he has paid the vehicle road tax in that state where he 
bought the car then he shall also have to renew road tax in 
the state where he is using the vehicle. 
The owner also has the option to cancel the registration in 
this particular state and get it re-registered in the new state 
and availing the facility of vehicle road tax online payment.

Under section 9, one is liable to claim on the tax paid 
by submitting form “DT” and mentioning all the details 
along with the certificate of taxation.

application is made after six months of the payment.
