4 Types of Sexual Disorders
4 Types Of Sexual Disorders
Sexual disorders can affect any point of the sexual response cycle which are desire, excitement or
orgasm/climax. The symptoms of sexual disorders cause can interfere with and disrupt individuals from having
a good experience before, during, or after sex.
There are four categories in which sexual disorders are placed, all of which can impact both men and women.
There can be an overlap between these and one disorder can cause another to arise. For example, a person
who has issues with getting aroused may end up losing desire after some time.
Arousal Disorders
The disorders that fall under the category of arousal disorders result in an individual's inability to become
physically aroused before and/or during sexual activity. The main symptom of any arousal disorder is that while
the desire or libido may be present, there is no physical arousal. One of the most common arousal disorders in
men is erectile dysfunction. Here, the man struggles to get or maintain an erection for a duration that he or his
partner may wish.
Desire Disorders
The disorders that fall under the category of desire disorders affect the sexual desire and/or interest of an
individual. Commonly, it is referred to as disorders that affect the libido. There are various causes of desire
disorders such as hormonal changes (decrease in estrogen or testosterone levels), chronic medical conditions
such as diabetes or heart disease, interpersonal problems within a relationship, mental health conditions such
as depression and anxiety, history of sexual abuse, fears, and phobias, etc. Sexual disorders that fall under this
category would include Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. Individuals who suffer from this find it difficult to
take initiative for sexual activities or to get “turned on” when their partner initiates it.
Orgasm disorders
The disorders that fall under the category of orgasm disorders result in an individual not being able to achieve
orgasm (anorgasmia) or experiencing a delayed or early orgasm. Sexual disorders that fall under this category
would include Anorgasmia in women and Ejaculation disorders such as delayed ejaculation and
premature ejaculation.
Pain disorders
The disorders that fall under the category of pain disorders result in pain or physical discomfort during sexual
intercourse. In women, this can be due to conditions such as vaginismus, excessive vaginal dryness or lack of
lubrication, medical conditions such as UTI, hormonal imbalances during PCOS, or menopause. In men, this can
be due to conditions such as Peyronie’s disease, UTIs, prostatitis, STDs such as herpes, or having a sensitive
glans penis, etc.
Sexual disorders can have emotional and psychological impacts, aside from physical ones. Individuals/Couples
are affected by the symptoms, possible lack of intimacy, insecurities, and fear of treatment. It is advised that a
sexual disorder should never be self-treated, especially not through self-medicating. There are various causes -
both physical and/or psychological - that can result in sexual dysfunction. A professional (an
andrologist/psychologist/psychiatrist) will be able to identify the accurate cause during a consultation, and
then determine a treatment plan that works for you.
Sexual health is as important as physical and mental health. In most cases, one consultation can go a long way.
