INTRODUCTION
Android is a Linux-based operating system
designed primarily for touchscreen mobile
devices such as smartphones and tablet
computers, developed by Google in
conjunction with the Open Handset Alliance.

Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the
founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a
consortium of 86 hardware, software, and
telecommunication companies devoted to
advancing open standards for mobile devices.

Initially, Android Inc. was founded in California
in October, 2003 by Andy Rubin(Co-founder
of Danger Inc), Rich Miner(Co-Founder of
Wildfire Communications Inc.) , Nick Sears

Google releases the Android code
Google releases the Android code as open-
source, under the Apache License.
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP),
lead by Google, is tasked with the
maintenance and further development of
Android.

Android has a large community of developers
writing applications that extend the
functionality of devices.
Developers write primarily in a customized
version of Java, and apps can be downloaded
from online stores such as Google Play the
app store run by Google, or third-party sites.

In June 2012, there were more than 600,000
apps available for Android, and the estimated
number of applications downloaded from
Google Play was 20 billion.

Revolution Phase Of Android
Phase 1:
• At start, Android Inc. was designed to
develop an operating system for Digital
Cameras.
• But later on, the plan was changed to
produce an operating system for
Smartphones which would compete with
Microsoft Windows Phones and Symbian and
all this initiatives were secret in the company.

Phase 2:
• In mid of 2005, Google took over Android Inc.
for $50 million with their key founder
members like Rubin, Miner and White.
• In initial phase at Google, Rubin and his team
developed a mobile device platform powered
by the Linux kernel and it was promoted for
marketing to the handset makers with
promise of providing an advanced system
phones.

Phase 3:
• In 2007, Some of devices manufactures like
HTC, Samsung and Sony came up with a
goal to design and develop open standards
for mobile devices which is based on Linux
Kernal and enabled with Android operating
system.

• In 2010, Google launched its Nexus series of
devices like smartphones and tablets
embedded with an android operating system.
• From 2010-2013, Google Now, Google Voice
Search, Speech recognition products was
launched as to compete with Apple’s Siri.
