Mega Solar Park Project
Introduction
• The Rewa Ultra Mega Solar is the country's first solar plant to crack the barrier to grid parity. It is an
active solar park spread over an area of 1,590 acres (6.4 sq.km) in the Gurh tehsil of Madhya Pradesh
district Rewa.
• The project was commissioned in December 2019, with a capacity of 750 MW.

Joint Agencies
• The project's implementing entity, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL), is a joint venture between
Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikash Nigam Limited (MPUVNL) and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
• RUMSL was established in July 2015 with Manu Srivastava, Chief Secretary, New & Renewable Energy,
Government of Madhya Pradesh as its Chairperson, and continued as its Chairperson until the project was
completed.

Target
• The solar plant in Rewa exemplifies India's commitment to achieving the target of 175 gigawatt (GW) of
renewable energy capacity installed by 2022.
• The solar power plant would also minimize emissions equivalent to about 15 lakh tons of carbon dioxide
annually.

Record-Winning Bid
• The project attracted global attention by landing in the country in 2017 through smart risk distribution a
record low-winning bid of some 2.97 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
• It has since become an anthem for the clean-energy evangelists from India.

Tariff
• It is the first such solar project by India to break the barrier to grid parity. The Solar project in Rewa
achieved the first year tariff of Rs 2.97 per unit compared with the tariffs of the prevailing solar project in
early 2017 of about Rs 4.50 per unit.
• This also revealed a tariff increase of Rs 0.05 per unit over a 15-year period, and a levelized Rs 3.30 per unit
over a 25-year period.

Total Expenses
• The developer has to pay Rs 5.4 crore land fees for each 250 MW unit, Rs 3.57 crore maintenance fees for
every six months for the first 10 years for each 250 MW unit, Rs 75 lakh administrative fees for each 250
MW unit, Rs 5 crore local area fees (in two installments), 2.5 crore registration fees have to be charged
beforehand.

PM’s View on the Project
• As per, PM Modi will be a medium of 21st century energy needs not just for the present, since solar power
is safe, pure and secure. The idea behind 'One World, One Sun, One Grid' is to satisfy the energy needs of
the planet's many smaller nations.
• Indian replicas of the Rewa solar plant in Shajapur, Neemuch and Chhatarpur are also under development,
the Prime Minister noted.
