Introduction
The government of the Union has banned 47
Chinese apps that operated as clones of the 59
banned apps, said two people who were aware of
the development.
The Indian government blocked 59 Chinese
applications in June, including the TikTok by
Bytedance, Alibaba's UC browser, citing security
concerns.

• Since the government initially blocked 59
Chinese apps, many of their clones and
related apps soared to the top of rankings in
Google Play.
• Strange, just a few weeks ago, Likee Lite, a
toned-down version of banned Likee,
appeared on top of Google Play lists.

Benefits to Other Chinese
Apps
According to data from user analytics
company Sensor Tower, Snack Video, which
is owned by Chinese Kuaishou, earned 10
million new downloads between June 29 and
July 19.
This was about 59 times out of the 172,000
downloads the app got between June 8 and
June 28, which is the month before the ban.

TikTok Maniacs
According to Sensor Tower, another device,
Zili, which is published by smartphone stalwart
Xiaomi, was the second-largest TikTok
alternative.
Over the same time, the firm found that Zili's
downloads increased by 167 percent to almost
8 million.

Indian Alternatives
At 71 million installs, Indian Roposo
has the most lifetime downloads,
followed by Zili at 51 million, and
Dubsmash at 30.4 million.

Reason for the Ban
In an interim order on 29 June, the Union
Electronics and Information Technology
Ministry said the apps were engaged in
activities that are detrimental to India's
sovereignty and independence, protection of
India, state security and public order.

Consequences
The ministry subsequently sent
these banned apps a list of 79
questions and gave them three
weeks' time to respond, failing which
would lead to their permanent ban.
