Indian Government to
open space sector for
private companies
Introduction
In a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, the
Central Government has approved the
opening of the main space sector for
private participation.
The government said the move would allow
India's premier space agency ISRO to
concentrate on research and development
while offering opportunities to expand
India's space exploration and technology
through private involvement.

Plan from History
Such reforms can be associated with the
power sector reforms implemented under
Atal Bihari Vajpayee government rule,
Union minister Javadekar said at the New
Delhi cabinet press conference.

Expectation
They've built up very good space assets,
these assets are now opening up for use by
everyone, as Javadekar has said.
He remembered that due to regulatory
restrictions, a group of Indian students, who
had ingeniously created a satellite, had to
launch from a facility outside India. With the
new reforms in the space sector, he said,
such a situation will not come in the future.

Historic Decision
It is a "historic decision" and a step away from
the custom of the past since independence.
Space minister Jitendra Singh owed Prime
Minister Narendra Modi credit for piloting the
far-sighted reform.
PM Modi is known for taking bold, unorthodox
and innovative decisions; hence the decision
was taken to host private sector involvement
in space sector activities.

Benefits
Space Minister added that the reform would
allow ISRO to concentrate more on research
and development activities and also help to
prevent the brain drain of Indian talent
while enhancing the socio-economic use of
space assets and activities like permitted
access to existing space assets at facilities.

Bright Future of India
Singh added that in every sphere of
operation India is now using space
technology and the space tech has reached
every household.
He said the time has come to boost the
potential of India in the sector by providing
a level playing field.

Conclusion
Cabinet decisions come weeks after Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has
announced the opening of private entities
to the space industry.
Some of the planetary exploration missions
will also be opened to the private sector via
a mechanism for 'announcing
opportunities.'
