INTRODUCTION
• The island nation of Mauritius has
declared a "state of environmental
emergency" after a vessel offshore
began leaking oil into the ocean.
• The large bulk carrier has since
begun leaking tons of fuel into the
surrounding waters.

APPEAL BY THE COUNTRY
• Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind
Jugnauth declared the state of
emergency on Friday.
• He said the nation did not have "the
skills and expertise to refloat stranded
ships" as he appealed to France for
help.

SEA POLLUTION
• The fuel and oil leak into nearby
lagoons threatened the survival of
thousands of species.
• It also threatens the increase in

ESTIMATED OIL LEAK
• At least 1,000 tonnes of oil is estimated
to have leaked from the ship onto the
waters surrounding Mauritius.
• Some 500 tonnes of oil have been

hampered by persistent bad weather.
