Introduction
• Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has inaugurated India's
first plasma bank at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences
(ILBS) to facilitate access to plasma used as a trial to treat
patients with Covid-19.
• The bank must work with people suffering from Covid-19
who are registered for plasma donation.

What is Plasma Bank?
• A plasma pool acts as a blood bank, created exclusively for
those suffering from Covid-19 and advised by physicians on
therapy. The facility was established at ILBS, which will be the
plasma collection nodal centre.

Where??
• Seven hospitals in Delhi have permission to run these
experiments on patients with Covid-19.
• These are All India Medical Sciences Institute (AIIMS), Maulana
Azad Medical College (MAMC), in coordination with the Institute
of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Indraprastha Apollo Hospital,
Batra Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Ram Manohar
Lohia Hospital (RML) and Max Hospital Saket.

Why the Step taken?
• The rising demand among the patients for plasma pushed
the government to set up a one-stop donor centre. Plasma
was not immediately accessible, so the patient's nurses
rushed from pillar to post in search of a retrieved patient's
plasma.
• People even avoided attending a hospital in Covid-19.

What happens in Plasma
Therapy?
• During plasma treatment, a recovering patient collects an
antibody saturated serum and administers it to a recipient.
• The studies aim to figure out how the antibodies will help
patients recover.

Who can Donate?
• Those who have had the disease but have recovered at least
14 days before the donation can be considered — although
doctors prefer a three-week period between recovery and
giving.
• Persons aged 18 to 60 and weighing not less than 50
kilograms are qualified.

Who can’t Donate?
• Women who took birth are not allowed.
• It also includes people with comorbidities such as diabetes ,
obesity and cancer. When you arrive at the clinic, a doctor
can take a comprehensive medical history and administer a
physical test

Tests before Donating
• Laboratory studies are performed to determine different
conditions: serum protein and CBC, hepatitis B virus TTI
testing, hepatitis C virus, HIV, malaria, and syphilis and blood
sorting and antibody screening tests. Serum Covid-19 is
preferred to have a specific IgG antibody concentration
greater than 80.

How to Contact Plasma
Bank?
• A patient who is healthy and willing to donate plasma may
call 8800007722 for information in 1031 or WhatsApp.
Afterwards, a team of doctors will call the patient to
ascertain further compliance.
• A vehicle is sent to the donor 's home, or the government will
reimburse the cost of transportation.

Conclusion
• One will use each plasma donation to treat 2 patients. Based
on weight the bank collects 500 ml of plasma.
• Just plasma is collected in plasma donation as opposed to
blood donation and the other blood products are transferred
to the body.
