Scientists
discover Earth-
sized exoplanet
bearing life-
supporting signs
Introduction
• Sometimes astronomical phenomena
and events relating to space become so
amazing that the more we get into them,
the more intriguing it becomes.
• A new study by a group of scientists has
surfaced that reveals the discovery of a
new planet that may be habitable along
with various pieces of evidence essential
to life.

Transiting Exoplanet
Survey Satellite
(TESS)
• The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite
(TESS) discovered 11 new stars close to
the Sun while being the size of an M-
dwarf star.
• In addition, these stars have a mass less
than 60% of the mass of the Sun while
having a temperature below 3,900
Kelvin.

AIM OF THE STUDY
• As for TESS, it was launched in 2018 to
discover new stars and subsequent
planets orbiting them near the Sun.
• In addition to this, the aim of this study
is also to study the nature of these
planets as well as the type of
atmosphere that prevails there.

DISCOVERY
• According to the study published in
Astrobiology, 17 such planets were
recently discovered orbiting their
respective stars.
• A team of scientists focused on three
small planets found orbiting a small M-
dwarf star.

TOI-700d
• In this series, the star named “ TOI-700d
” was found to represent the size of the
Earth while being located in the
habitable zone of the star.
• In addition, this TOI-700d star is 102 light
years from Earth.

RADIOUS
• The radius of the other two planets,
including the Earth-sized planet, is 1.04,
2.65, and 1.14 respectively, while their
orbital periods span 9.98. , 16.05 and
37.42 days respectively.

M-dwarf star
• TOI-700d is also becoming an attractive
planet on which astronomers can
continue their research as it revolves
around a M-dwarf star that is much
cooler than the Sun while the planet
itself is located in absolute proximity to
the star.

accommodate the
possibility of life
• It could allow surface water to be liquid
with an atmosphere that can pose crucial
signs of life.
• So, unlike Mercury which is also located
closest to the Sun and whose climate
and temperature are untenable, this
Earth-sized planet is even closer to its
star than Mercury could still
accommodate the possibility of life.

infra-red digicam
• astronomers at TESS have used IRAC
delicate infra-red digicam from Spitzer
Area Observatory to detect and
additional substantiate their findings via
sure indicators.

water-bearing
clouds
• Within the hindsight, astronomers have
already noticed the planet twice in
October 2019 and January 2020.
• TOI-700d may need rocky floor with its
mass ranging at that of two i.e Earth-
masses. Moreover scientists are hopeful
of discovering water-bearing clouds
within the environment of the planet.
