INTRODUCTION
• It is compulsory for all foreign students to obtain a student authority and visa before
migrating to study in Canada. A student must also meet the requirements of the
Canadian Immigration Act and Regulations under normal circumstances.

STEP 1: APPLY FOR ADMISSION IN
COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY
• To study in Canada firstly, you should obtain an approval of admissions (offer letter)
from an accredited education provider in Canada.
• The best way to find a right education provider is to conduct research on the best
colleges/universities in Canada offering relevant courses and shortlist a few of them.

STEP 2: CHECK IF YOU NEED TO APPLY
FOR A STUDENT VISA IN CANADA
• You can use the official Canadian study permit tool to find out if you need a study
visa or permit. You don’t need a study visa if one of the following situations applies to
you:
– You are a family or staff member of a foreign representative in Canada, who is accredited by the
Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.
– You enroll in a study programme that lasts less than six months.
– You are a member of foreign armed forces from the Visiting Forces Act.
– You are a citizen of another country, but you have an Indian status registered in Canada.

STEP 3: START YOUR APPLICATION
FOR THE CANADIAN STUDENT VISA
• The steps to obtain your student visa:
– Apply online for your Canadian student visa, on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website
before you arrive in Canada.
– Send the visa application documents by post if you have a limited internet connection or cannot submit the
documents online.
– Provide an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (a university recognized by the Canadian
government).
– Deliver proof of sufficient financial resources to support your studies in Canada (tuition fees and living
expenses).

STEP 4: RENEW OR EXTEND THE
STUDY PERMIT
• The study permit expires 90 days after your studies are finished (when you receive a
notification of the programme completion).
• You can still stay in Canada to travel and explore or apply for a work permit, which
allows you to take a full time or part-time job, or even be self-employed.

STEP 5: PREPARE ALL REQUIRED
DOCUMENTS FOR THE STUDENT VISA
• Filled-in student permit application form
• The original letter of acceptance from the university
• A valid passport/travel document, which also allows you to return to your home
country. If you live in the USA, this is not necessary.
• Two recent passport-size photographs, with specifications of name and date of birth
on the back
• Proof of financial support during your study programme.

STEP 6: PAY TUITION FEE
• After accepting your offer from your education provider, you must pay the tuition fee
as mentioned in the offer letter.
• This payment is made by International Wire Transfer. Once the institutions have
received and processed your tuition fee payment, they will issue you with receipt.
• This receipt will be needed to lodge your Canada student visa application.

STEP 7: PURCHASE OF GIC (GUARANTEED
INVESTMENT CERTIFICATE)
• It is compulsory for the students to buy a special guaranteed investment certificate
(GIC) from any of the participating bank like: Nova Scotia Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI
Canada Bank, CIBC Bank for the amount of $ 10,200 CAD for the adjustment of the
living expenses of the first year.

STEP 8: UNDERTAKE MEDICALS
• You will now need to take a medical
examination a doctor approved by the
Canadian government.
• You will be provided a receipt for the
medical, which is required when you
apply for a visa. The medical report will
automatically be transferred to the visa
office.
