emotionally scared.
Shape Diverse 
Personalities
• Your characters should have a unique personality.
• They should have different personalities, strengths, 
weaknesses, and motivations.
• Example: Ron Weasley is a loyal friend, but he is also 
insecure and often jealous of Harry. Hermione Granger 
is a brilliant student, but she can be bossy and know-it-
all.
 Define Clear Goals
• Your characters should have something they 
want to achieve.
• This could be a personal goal, such as 
finding love or getting revenge, or a larger 
goal, such as saving the world.
• Example: Frodo Baggins' goal is to destroy 
the One Ring, even though he knows it will 
cost him his life.
Introduce Compelling 
Obstacles
• Your characters should face challenges that make 
them grow and change.
• These challenges could be physical, emotional, or 
psychological.
• Example: Katniss Everdeen must overcome the 
Hunger Games to save her sister.
Establish Relatable 
Traits
• Your characters should be people that readers can 
relate to.
• They should have flaws and make mistakes, but 
also be brave, kind, and compassionate.
• Example: Atticus Finch is a lawyer who defends a 
black man accused of raping a white woman.
Ensure Lasting Impressions
• Your characters should stick in readers' minds long 
after they have finished your book.
• They should be unique, interesting, and complex.
• Example: Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant detective 
who is always one step ahead of the criminals. He 
is a complex character who is both brilliant and 
flawed.
