Amoxicillin Capsules
Amoxicillin 250 mg and 500 mg capsules are
antibiotics from the penicillin group used to treat
bacterial infections and, in combination with
other medications, to treat stomach ulcers. Avoid
taking Amoxicillin if you're allergic to
amoxicillin, penicillin, or have had allergic
reactions to any antibiotics, such as skin rashes
or swelling. If unsure, consult your doctor or
pharmacist.
Warnings and Precautions
• Have glandular fever (fever, sore throat,
swollen glands and extreme tiredness)
• Have kidney problems
Blood and urine tests
If you are having:
• Urine tests (glucose) or blood tests for liver function
• Oestriol tests (used during pregnancy to check the baby is
developing normally)
Tell your doctor or pharmacist that you are taking Amoxicillin
Capsule. This is because Amoxicillin Capsule can affect the 4
results of these tests.
How to take Amoxicillin Capsules
• Always take Amoxicillin Capsules exactly as directed by your doctor or
pharmacist, spacing doses evenly at least 4 hours apart and swallowing
them whole with water.
• Dosages vary based on age, weight, and condition severity—children under 40
kg receive 40–90 mg/kg/day, while adults and children over 40 kg typically take
250–500 mg three times daily or up to 1 g twice daily, with higher doses for
severe infections.
• For specific conditions like urinary tract infections, Lyme disease, or stomach
ulcers, your doctor will adjust the dose accordingly. If you have kidney problems,
your dose may be reduced.
• Do not double up on missed doses, and complete the full course even if you feel
better. Overuse may lead to side effects like thrush or require monitoring of
kidney, liver, and blood function. If you take too much, consult a doctor
immediately.
Possible Side Effects
• Allergic reactions, the signs may include: skin itching or rash, swelling of the
face, lips, tongue, body or breathing difficulties. These can be serious and
occasionally deaths have occurred.
• Rash or pinpoint flat red round spots under the skin surface or bruising of the skin.
This is due to inflammation of blood vessel walls due to an allergic reaction. It can
be associated with joint pain (arthritis) and kidney problems.
• A delayed allergic reaction can occur usually 7 to 12 days after having Amoxicillin
Capsules, some signs include: rashes, fever, joint pains and enlargement of the
lymph nodes especially under the arms.
• High temperature (fever), chills, a sore throat or other signs of an infection, or if
you bruise easily. These may be signs of a problem with your blood cells.
